DAY 1: MARANGU GATE TO MANDARA HUTS

Distance: 8.3km/5mi | Duration: 4-5 hours | Terrain: Rainforest

After breakfast, you'll depart from Moshi on a 1-hour drive to Marangu Village and the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. While waiting for permits, enjoy the lively atmosphere as crews prepare for the trek. As you begin, you'll pass through lush rainforest with winding trails, where your guide will share insights on the local flora, fauna, and wildlife. The trail can be muddy and slippery at this altitude, so gaiters and trekking poles are highly recommended.

DAY 2: MANDARA HUTS TO HOROMBO HUTS

Distance: 12.5km/7.8mi | Duration: 6-8 hours | Terrain: Moorland
Elevation: 2723m/8934ft to 3721m/12,208ft | Altitude gain: 998m

After a restful night and a hearty breakfast, you'll emerge from the rainforest and continue on a steadily ascending path through heathland, keeping an eye out for giant lobelias and groundsels. As you move into the open moorlands, small shrubs dominate the landscape. Stop for lunch and take in the breathtaking views of Mawenzi before continuing to Horombo Huts, where you'll arrive in the late afternoon, with Kibo Summit in clear view.

DAY 3: ACCLIMATIZATION AT HOROMBO HUTS

Spend the day at Horombo Huts, either resting or taking a short hike to the Mawenzi base camp before returning to Horombo. This additional day is crucial for acclimatization and gaining a better understanding of the mountain's weather and altitude. After this pause, you'll continue to Kibo Huts on Day 4 in preparation for the midnight summit ascent.

DAY 4: HOROMBO HUTS TO KIBO HUTS

Distance: 10.5km/6mi | Duration: 6-8 hours | Terrain: Semi-desert

After breakfast, continue trekking through the diminishing heathland, which gradually transforms into a barren moonscape as you approach the vast saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. You'll pause for lunch before crossing the saddle, allowing you to take in the view of the Kibo summit climb that awaits you.

DAY 5: KIBO HUTS TO SUMMIT (UHURU PEAK) AND DESCENT TO HOROMBO HUTS

Distance: 6.25km/3.9mi up, 15.75km/9mi down | Duration: 5-7 hours up, 5-6 hours down | Terrain: Glaciers, snow-capped summit
Elevation: 4714m/15,466ft to 5895m/19,341ft | Altitude gain: 1181m
Descent to: 3721m/12,208ft | Altitude loss: 2174m

Excitement builds as you begin your summit attempt between midnight and 2 a.m. The ascent is a switchback climb through scree and possibly snow, heading towards Gillman’s Point on the crater rim. Here, you’ll be rewarded with a magnificent sunrise, with faster hikers catching the sunrise from the summit. The final hour to Uhuru Peak may involve trekking through snow. Upon reaching Uhuru Peak, you’ll have accomplished the incredible feat of standing at the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the entire continent of Africa!

DAY 6: HOROMBO HUTS TO MARANGU GATE AND RETURN TO MOSHI

Distance: 20km/12.5mi | Duration: 6-7 hours | Terrain: Rainforest
Elevation: 3721m/12,208ft to 1905m/6250ft | Altitude loss: 1816m

After breakfast, enjoy a heartfelt ceremony with your crew before beginning your descent. You’ll stop at Mandara Huts for lunch, and then continue down to the Marangu Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificates. As you descend, expect warmer weather and muddy, steep terrain—gaiters and trekking poles are recommended. From the gate, a vehicle will take you back to your hotel in Moshi for a much-needed hot shower, dinner, and celebrations.

Overnight at Kilimanjaro White House B&B, before being transferred for your onward journey, whether it be home, safari, or a relaxing trip to Zanzibar.

Mount Kilimanjaro, situated near the equator, does not undergo extreme winter or summer conditions. Instead, the weather is characterized by alternating wet and dry seasons.

Kilimanjaro experiences four distinct seasons: the short rainy season, long rainy season, short dry season, and long dry season.

The most favorable time for climbing Kilimanjaro is during the dry seasons. January and February, part of the short dry season, typically feature clear skies in the mornings and evenings, though daytime clouds and brief showers are possible. The long dry season spans from July to October, offering the most consistent conditions for a successful ascent.

For those willing to face a bit of rain and cloud cover, the transition months of June, December, and mid-March are also considered suitable for climbing.

November marks the short rainy season, while the long rainy season extends from mid-March to early June. We generally advise against trekking during these periods due to wet conditions and limited visibility caused by heavy clouds. However, seasoned hikers who are accustomed to challenging conditions might find these times ideal for avoiding crowds, as campsites are usually very quiet.
