DAY 7. S U M M I T !!!

I MADE IT !!

Oh what a push! I wasn’t able to sleep very well, give it was only 3hrs to rest. But the altitude bumps up the heart rate and of course the anticipation zaps the nerves. We began at 11:30PM for our 13hr round trip climb to the “Roof of Africa”.
Full rock faces with so much wind and dust, it was hard to find my way, other than the steady stream of headlamps on a parade of climbers. The temps were -5°C and I couldn’t guess winds, but twice blew me down.
The peak seemed to get pushed back every time another hilltop was reached.
When sun broke, we were at about 5,700m but the delirium was increasing due to the thin oxygen.
Once I spotted Stella Point (18,885ft), I thought we were near. I passed several climbers I met over the past days, who cheered me on and I the same for them. “Only 125m more!” Well, what wasn’t realized was that height was almost 1km more to climb! Torture but determination! Colman from Dotcom Safaris was feeling the effects but ushered me past the massive Furtwangler Glacier on to Uhuru Peak (19,341ft)!
It was cold!
It was bitterly windy!
Everyone was punch-drunk from the oxygen deprivation, but I soldiered on!

The euphoria of laying eyes on the iconic marker that I had only seen in pics was now before me IN PERSON!

The amazement made me cry with joy. My mental chemo moment. The mountain that I climbed with the help of doctors and nurses, was now MINE alone. This hurdle was hard. Now I know I can tackle greater mountains.

The thrill to be amongst the few that have made it to Uhuru and the club I joined, has made me proud and tremendously humbled.
I hope we are able to overcome our individual mountains. I hope we can all support each other and lift each other up. I hope we can all appreciate the beauty and joy in the world and know that there ain’t no mountai high enough to keep us away from loving the beauty in each other!
