Our guests Natalie & Patrick made it to Hans Meyer apoint (5,220m) where they had to turn back down due to safety reasons – well done on this great achievement. 🔝👏 Thank you to our amazing crew for taking them up and safely back down again!

ℹ️ The summit attempt starts around mid-night to reach Uhuru Peak by sunrise. Passing Hans Meyer Cave (5,220 m), Gilman’s Point (5,681m) on the crater rim and Stella Point (5,730m) the strenuous hike takes climbers to the highest point on the African continent. After enjoying the views on the top, summit crew and climbers hike back to Kibo Hut for a warm meal and some rest, before the descent continues to Horombo Hut.

A tough day awaited for our guests on their way to Kibo Hut, the base camp for the summit attempt 💪

ℹ️ A long and tough hike takes climbers and crew uphill on a 6-hour long trail across the almost plant-less afro-alpine desert. They reach Kibo Hut in the early afternoon and will try to get some rest, before starting the summit attempt around mid-night to reach Uhuru Peak by sunrise.

Day 3: Horombo Huts (3,700m) to Zebra Rocks (~4,000m) to Horombo Huts (3,700m)

After a relaxed breakfast, our climbers today hike to Zebra Rocks and back to Horombo Huts again, enjoying the beautiful weather 🦓

ℹ️ The third day on the climb is dedicated to acclimatising to the altitude – walking high and sleeping low assists the body in getting used to lower oxygen levels. Today’s hike takes climbers to a black and white striped rock formation, aptly named Zebra Rocks, and higher up towards the Kibo saddle connecting Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks, before returning to Horombo Hut again.

Day 3: New Shira Camp (3,845m) to Lava Tower (4,640 m) to Barranco Camp (3,960m)

Well-rested our guests Felicit & Ben today hiked up to Lava Tower and back down to the beautiful Barranco Camp. With a bit of luck, they enjoy spectacular views of Kibo from camp. ⛰️

ℹ️ Today’s focus is acclimatisation: Following the “climb high, sleep low” maxim, our climbers slowly expose their bodies to the higher altitude, increasing their chances for a successful summit. Over the 6-to-7-hour hike, vegetation changes to an alpine desert towards Lava Tower and takes our guests through the Barranco Valley with its lobelia and senecio plants.
