Kilimanjaro, a breathtaking landmark of Tanzania, can be seen from many different locations.
This majestic mountain lights up the sky, and on a clear day, it is visible from over 100 kilometers away!
This means that Kilimanjaro graces the backdrop of Moshi, Arusha, and Mwanga in Tanzania but it can also be spotted as far away as Mombasa in Kenya!

According to the Wildlife Conservation Society, Tanzania is home to 37 chameleon species, of which 23 are endemic.

Chameleons are best known for their color-changing abilities, which they mostly use to express their emotions, such as when they desire to mate or are ready to fight. Their color also changes due to temperature and light.

Tanzania is considered a great place to observe these fascinating reptiles. From coastal forests and savannahs to the montane regions, chameleons inhabit a diverse range of environments.

Despite their remarkable adaptations, many Tanzanian chameleons face threats from habitat loss due to agricultural expansion, logging, and human settlement. Conservation efforts are crucial to protect these unique reptiles and preserve Tanzania’s rich biodiversity.

Did you know Tanzania boasts the largest populations of leopards, lions, and buffaloes in all of Africa?

According to the latest report from Tanzania Wildlife Research () here’s a breakdown of their numbers:

- 24,000 leopards 🐆
- 17,000 lions 🦁
- 225,000 buffaloes 🐃

Spotting these members of the Big Five is a dream come true for many safari-goers, and Tanzania offers some of the best opportunities in Africa!

These impressive numbers highlight the importance of conservation efforts. The Tanzanian government and NGOs are actively working to protect these animals and their habitats. Let’s all do our part to support these crucial initiatives!

Big thanks to Ben for sharing these fantastic photos!

Happy Earth Day! 🌍

The 2024 theme is “Planet vs Plastic”.
In Tanzania, 95% of plastic is mismanaged, posing a threat to wildlife and natural areas, with only 34% collected. One vital step is the government’s ban on plastic bag import
and usage. Yet, plastic bottles remain prevalent in nature.

At Tanzania Journeys, sustainability is at the heart of what we do. In addition to reducing plastic waste, we aim to make a difference in small steps.
💧We encourage travelers to carry reusable bottles, providing fresh water for refill during trips.
♻️Our local guide Lemra leads efforts to reduce plastic pollution around Lake Natron, constructing a recycling facility in a traditional Maasai boma style.
🚮Tanzania Journeys also participates in the Leave No Trace Project, with porters and guide Abou collecting trash on the Mweka Route to Kilimanjaro. We ensure their safety with provided equipment, food, and transportation.

Let’s take small steps together to create a sustainable future for our planet!

Have you seen structures like that while in Tanzania?

These are nothing else but mounds, or termitariums—houses for mound-building termites that inhabit countries of Australia, South America, and Africa.

Mounds can often be spotted in the savannahs of Tanzania, but they also appear in towns and villages—well-drained areas and clay are all termites need to create such astonishing architecture.

Construction of one mound can take years, but they often outlive the termite population and stand strong for decades.

Inside these mounds are myriads of galleries and tunnels that serve as ventilation. Termites also form shafts that lead to an underground nest, which is usually spherical and contains chambers.

Termite colonies are divided into social casts. Workers are the smallest individuals but most numerous of all casts. Their role is to feed the population, find water, and build, but also maintain the tunnels. The next group is the soldiers. They defend the colony and spray enemies with a glue-like toxin. The last group is reproductives—with the queen and king themselves.

Termites are detritivores, meaning they feed on decaying organic matter and recycle important nutrients back into the ecosystem. Inside the tunnels, termites grow fungus farms and store wood, which are two things they feed on.

Despite their amazing architecture, termites also work sustainably to provide for their colony. Isn’t that amazing?

As we celebrate World Health Day, we want to highlight the efforts that Tanzania Journeys makes to promote the health and safety of local communities and employees.
From Engaresero Village, near Lake Natron, we supplied a water pipeline to the local clinic, and we have constructed a doctor’s house in Naiti village, near Makayuni.
As proud members of the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project, we guarantee that all of our crew members work in proper conditions with professional equipment, receive three meals a day, and have proper sleep conditions.

At Tanzania Journeys, we strongly believe in this year’s slogan: ‘My health, my right,’ as we continue to put efforts into empowering people around us!

Mbege, a traditional alcoholic beverage is prepared and savored by the Chagga communities in Tanzania.
It is a beer produced from finger millet (”mugimbi” in Swahili) and ripe bananas. Its taste is often described as sweet with a sour aftertaste- similar to wine. Interestingly, the process of Mbege preparation is laborious and strictly reserved to women.
Mbege is an important part of Chagga’s culture. It is called a “social beer” as people consume it during business meetings, weddings and celebrations.

Here you can see various stages of Mbege preparation. Soon, we will post a full recipe 🍌🍻

Check out these photos from a trip with travelers from WHOA Travel😍!

The picturesque Machame route lies amongst one of the most popular trails to climb Kilimanjaro. It is 65km long and serves incredible views featuring various flora and fauna as well as beautiful volcanic features of Mt Kilimanjaro. This route is classified as moderately difficult thus we recommend this climb for travelers with some mountain or hiking experience, and with good health and fitness. Our professional and experienced Wilderness First Responder certified mountain guides lead climbers through the route, providing valuable skills, knowledge and support to ensure a safe, comfortable and enjoyable journey. We recommend a 7 days expedition on the Machame route in order to smoothly acclimatise to the altitude. Tent accommodation at all camps adds some wilderness to the whole experience.

This hard-top Land Cruiser is a proud member of Toyota’s legendary 70 Series. It is perfectly suitable for off-road conditions commonly found in national parks during your game drive. The Land Cruiser is by far the most reliable vehicle for handling the harshest terrain, thanks to its 4x4 wheel drive and a powerful engine.
Our vehicle can accommodate up to 7 passengers, but we often recommend taking the 6 window seats to fully admire the wildlife. 🐒
The interior is thoughtfully designed for both comfort and functionality. Our cars are also equipped with safety features.
In our vehicles, we also provide containers with fresh water that can be poured into your reusable bottles. 💧
We prioritise the well-being of our travelers, providing peace of mind on every adventure. 😌

Look closely! Can you spot a grazing Grant’s Gazelle?

Tanzanian parks are home to 17 species of antelopes, making it quite difficult to distinguish between them!

Encounters with Grant’s Gazelle are quite common, as their population is estimated to be between 140,000 and 350,000. However, their resemblance to other species, such as the Thomson’s Gazelle, might cause confusion.

Here are some distinguishing features that will help you recognize the swala granti:

🌱 Their coat is beige on the back with a white belly, while the Thomson’s Gazelle additionally has a black stripe on its side.

🌱 Grant’s Gazelles are usually much larger than Thomson’s Gazelles.

🌱 Horns of the swala granti are long, lyre-shaped, and visibly ringed.

🌱 Grant’s Gazelles have a white tail that extends from their rump, whereas Thomson’s Gazelles’ tails are black.

Thank you Anjan Lal Wildlife Photographer for such a great shot 📸

Ubuyu, or baobab fruits, when cracked open contain sour, powdery seed pods which have various health benefits. Monkeys and warthogs feast on the baobab fruits, bush babies and bats slurp the syrup from the tree and elephants nibble on the bark which can provide them moisture during dry seasons.
Here in Tanzania we suck the powder off the seeds or sell the powder without the seeds. A common use for the powder is to make a delicious juice, by only mixing it with water.

In today’s post we want to shine a light on the difficulties that Lemra encountered while implementing the recycling project that we talked about in our previous post ♻️

Though significant progress has been made, a few challenges have affected the project’s progress. Reliable transportation remains an issue, and there is still a long way to go to create greater community awareness about the importance of recycling.
Proper waste containers are also a gap, and expertise in community development is required to assist Lemra in implementing the project effectively.

As an ethical tourism enterprise who believes in sustainable tourism, Tanzania Journeys is deeply committed to supporting local initiatives that create a positive, empowering and sustainable impact. We are thrilled to contribute to Lemra's initiative. We have committed to sourcing and funding for the waste.

If you're interested in helping raise awareness or seek sponsorship for this incredible project, please contact us. Your support can make a significant difference on the path to sustainability and community enrichment.
Watch this space for more posts about our contribution to the project!

Do you remember our amazing dedicated guide from Lake Natron, Lemra?

His vision for a recycling project in the Lake Natron area is truly inspiring 🤩.

Many tourists visiting the area complained of plastic pollution and Lemra recognized the issue. He wants to preserve his homeland so he began cleaning up the area with his community.

The project centers around a recycling facility designed in the traditional Maasai Boma style, constructed entirely from recycled plastic and glass bottles sourced locally. Sponsor companies from Tanzania, such as Oryx Gas or Africa Craft have generously funded this initiative to collaborate with the local community.

Lemra, who also serves as the village chairman, provided the land for this project and has coordinated the setup of five waste collection points, along with providing training to the local communities on the benefits of recycling ♻️ 🌍.

Next week we will share more about this amazing project- underlining the difficulties and talking about contributing to its development!

Abou joined the training program, worked diligently, and set his sights on becoming a professional mountain guide. He underwent both theoretical and practical training on the mountain. He scored highly on the exam, proudly becoming a full-fledged mountain guide for Mount Kilimanjaro.

"I love it very much - the more I keep on climbing, it's in my blood, in my heart," says Abou. "It gives me an opportunity to meet new people from all around the world. I learn so much from travelers, and I share my experiences with them. This journey not only strengthens my body but also enriches my mind, exposing me to the diverse beauty of our world."

Abou's favorite Kiswahili phrase is "tembea pole pole," which means "walk slow and steady." It's a reminder to appreciate the journey and savor every step.

But Abou's love for exploration doesn't end on Kilimanjaro. He has a special place in his heart for Zanzibar, a destination that has captivated him with its rich culture, warm people, delicious food, and unique dress code. About also loves the Ngorongoro Highlands trek.

So, when you embark on a journey with Abou, you're not just climbing a mountain; you're stepping into a world of passion, knowledge, and an unwavering love for adventure.

Meet Abou, the Heartbeat of Kilimanjaro 🏔️

Abou is the incredible mountain guide who's been leading our journeys through the stunning Kilimanjaro since 2011.

His journey into the world of guiding is nothing short of inspiring. His initial dream was to become a safari driver guide, but it wasn't an easy path. After college, he struggled to find a job as a safari driver with limited experience.

But life had other plans for Abou! One day, a college mate found an announcement about training mountain guides in Kilimanjaro National Park. Before embarking on this new adventure, Abou started as a porter. After three challenging months, he realized that mountaineering was his true calling…

This is only a beginning of Abou’s story. Continuation of his incredible journey will be shared with you next week 🤩.

Stay tuned 💚!
