The genetic study helps show that the ancestors of today's Aboriginals came here about 58,000 years ago.

We live in an extraordinary part of the world surround by landscapes that resonate deeply and are appreciated daily. But whenever our friends and guests let us know in the small ways how their safari stays with them, well on our hill in the Central frontier we smile extra big. Thank you for this gorgeous photo

Such a gorgeously poetic capture of the cloud forest high up in the Ndotos. These eco-systems are integral to parts of the northern region as they are incredibly rich in bio-diversity, hosting endemic species that are unique to particular forests

A most beautiful of sightings. Wild dog in the lugga. Pack of approximately 40. We heard their carry on from miles away and then they appeared around a bend in the lugga. Thanks to Helen, the Samburu communities and the tireless effort of the wildlife in the Central Frontier is beginning once again to flourish. Sightings like these are so very special. We did nothing but sit on the edge of the lugga, tea in hand and watched with delight as these wild dogs played, slept and basked in the sun

Wandering around this frontier we experience so much extraordinary beauty. From the landscape to the wildlife and of course the people, it takes at least six days walking with us to begin to immerse yourself in it all. We walk from a minimum of six days through to longer expeditions of four weeks to remote corners of Kenya like Lake Turkana. Every walk is at your own pace

Family outing down the Milgis Lugga! Look how many babies there are. One of our goals is to see the return of megaherds to the Ndoto Mountains, Mount Nyiro and Mt Kulal. The great white hunters and shifta of the past decades had seen to the decimation of these herds but in large due to the tireless work of Helen, the Milgis Trust and regions communities these gentle giants are regrouping, breeding and living peacefully once more. If you havent already please head over to and FOLLOW us and the work we do 📷

Many tribes roam the NFD but Helen has worked for years with the Samburu community. Adventurous and intrepid explorers, see in Kenya's north a world of marvelous possibilities- in terms of the natural world and the people. Wilfred Thesiger- one of the 20th century's leading explorers and travel writers spent over 20 years of his life amongst the Samburu and Turkana of northern Kenya. He was a passionate fan of traditional societies; particularly desert tribal people who remain untempted by the allures of the modern world 📷 by our own

The Northern Frontier District is our home and base of our Wild Frontiers Walking Safaris. The NFD consists of just over a third of Kenya. North of Marala, Isiolo and Garissa, it includes the Matthews Ranges, the Ndoto Mountains, Meru, Turkana, Samburu, Mt Nyiru, the Chalbi Desert, and the Shaba Game Reserve. In this harsh, remote and beautiful world, the last of Kenya's proud nomadic tribal people live out their days as their forbearers did before them, perhaps for thousands of years

“ The Samburu people have different words for a camel, depending on whether it’s singular, plural, male or female and I could think of plenty more imaginative terms to indicate how these crazy-looking ungulates behave, not to mention their repertoire of gurgles, roars, spitting, belching and even ruder sounds. But camels make ideal travelling companions; they carry plenty of food and water for us, while surviving on minimal food and even less drink themselves” - Barnes, Walking With Camels, Ndege News

“ Some days we covered about 15km, others more and others less. Best of all is to come for six to ten days and amble all round the Ndotos, head over the mountains with porters or up to Lake Turkana. But this isn’t for everybody; as Helen puts it, “It’s particularly not for people who want to do a bit of this and a bit of that.” It’s a deep, immersive experience. However, it is curiously addictive and many find something so compelling, so meaningful in these lonely places that they return time and time again. One visitor summed it up perfectly: “Aching feet and smiling hearts… We couldn’t have felt more privileged” - Lucia van de Post, In Among The Samburu, Destinations
