: Cranes have arrived in a newly restored wetland habitat at Wicken Fen 🙌

Wildlife is returning to Wicken Fen, the National Trust's oldest nature reserve in Cambridgeshire.

Since the start of the 215ha peatland restoration project last October, cranes – once extinct in Britain – have already found their way to the recovering wetlands.

"Wetlands are really special for wildlife because so much life depends on them, whether it's the insects drawn to the water, all the birdlife drawn to the insects - and then nesting birds find safe places to nest in reeds or roost in trees around." - Ajay Tegala

From the brink of extinction to a conservation triumph! 🦌✨

Once on the edge of disappearing forever, the saiga antelope has made a stunning comeback. In 2005, only 48,000 remained in Kazakhstan. Today, thanks to conservation efforts, that number has soared to 1.9 million.

Now, the challenge is ensuring their future. Sustainable trade management and stockpile regulation of saiga horn — used in traditional medicine — could be key to ensure this Ice Age antelope continues to thrive 💚

This Reverse the Red Day, let’s celebrate what’s possible thanks to sustained conservation efforts!

👋 Wave hello to the world's LARGEST turtle: the leatherback! These gentle giants weigh up to 1,000 pounds and grow up to 6 feet long.

Like many marine animals, leatherbacks face threats from human activities including entanglement in fishing gear, ingestion of plastics and other marine debris, and injury from boat strikes.

Gabon, Africa is home to the world’s biggest nesting population of leatherback sea turtles, making the country a critical site for conservation. We're proud to work closely with partners in Gabon to strengthen marine protection across the country's entire coastline, creating safer habitats for these endangered turtles and other marine species.

ZOOFLAKE - Forest Elephant
The Forest Elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis) is the smaller of two species of elephants found in Africa. It inhabits the dense rainforests of west and central Africa. Although somewhat similar to their cousin the African Savannah Elephant (Loxodonta africana), the Forest Elephant has more oval-shaped ears and straighter, downward point tusks. It also has differences in the size and shape of the skull and skeleton along with a slower birth rate. The African Forest Elephant lives in family groups of up to 20 individuals. Its diet includes leaves, grasses, seeds, fruit, and tree bark. It is considered an important disperser of many plant and tree species. Sadly, populations have declined by 62% between 2002 and 2011 and during that period, the species also lost 30% of its geographical range. Poaching for ivory is the primary threat to the species.

While we were busy over the last few weeks supporting better protections for south-east Australia's offshore oceans, there was some big news out of the Northern Hemisphere...

🏝️ The Azores are an archipelago of islands that are an autonomous region of Portugal. They sit between Europe's west coast and North America's east coast, in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean. These islands are home to sharks, fish, whales and deep-sea corals.

The new marine park covers 287,000 square kilometres. About half of that area will remain open to certain types of fishing, while the other half will be fully protected in marine sanctuaries.

ℹ️ Marine sanctuaries act like national parks in the ocean. They protect marine life from damaging activities while still allowing things like swimming, snorkelling, diving and surfing.

If you want to learn more about the difference between marine parks and fully protected marine sanctuaries, search up our short film 'Sanctuary' on YouTube or our website.
