St. Joseph's Cathedral, was built by French missionaries between 1893 and 1898. The plans were drawn by the same French architect who designed the cathedral in Marseilles, France.

The defining characteristic of the cathedral are its twin spires (similar to those of Marseille’s church) which are prominent elements of the Stone Town’s skyline and can be easily spotted from a distance off the coast.

The cathedral is used by the catholic community to date. The cathedral holds historical significance and there are many things to learn from the place.

This is the old dispensary located in Stone town Zanzibar. This despensary was built by Tharia Topan, ismaili indian merchant who was also a financial adviser to the Sultan and banker to Tippu Tip, a slave trader.

Currently, this building has offices and you may wonder in it for free.

The Old Fort, Ngome kongwe as it is called by the locals, was built in the year 1699 by the Arabs. This building is believed to be the oldest building in Stone town.

Here are portraits of some sultans who ruled Zanzibar.

In 1861, Zanzibar was separated from Muscat and Oman and became an independent sultanate.

The longest-serving sultan of Zanzibar was Khalifa ibn Harub who assumed the throne on December 9, 1911 and served until his death on October 9, 1960.

In January 1964, the sultanate was overthrown by a revolt and a new republic was born.

This afternoon we visited Palace Museum at Forodhani, Zanzibar. The place holds significant history of the governance of Zanzibar during the sultanate era.

The place also has an amazing view of the Indian ocean and Forodhani garden.
