Did you know,
There are three main types of doors in Zanzibar.
* The Indian Doors
* The Arabic Doors
* The Swahili Doors
The most memorable feature of Zanzibar houses is the spectacular carved Zanzibar doors. These Zanzibar doors signify their original owners' aspirations, socio-economic status, ethnicity, and customs. The greater the wealth and social position of the house owner, the larger and more elaborately carved their front door would be. Many of the Zanzibar doors have been carved with Arabic influences.
The tradition originates from countries around the Persian Gulf and spread through Afghanistan to places like India in the first half of the 12th century. Although no two doors are the same, you can often clearly see where the influences of the carvers have come from. When plunging deeper into the fascinating world of Zanzibar doors, youβll discover that each door is preciously different and has its meaning of the Ornaments and patterns which tell the story of the resident wave-like patterns and ropes allude to the seaborne trade. Chains are said to protect the building from evil spirits,
But they also mark the mansions of wealthy Arab slave traders, flowers at the top of the door tell how many families used to live inside, whereas vines refer to the spice trade. The geometric shapes, like squares, refer to accountants while the royal family's door is designed to represent a family's social status and is distinguished by a carving of a lion, serpent, and falcon, the symbols used by the royal family.

The Zanzibar red colobus (Piliocolobus kirkii) is a species of red colobus monkey endemic to Unguja, the main island of the Zanzibar Archipelago, off the coast of Tanzania. It is also known as Kirk's red colobus after Sir John Kirk, the British Resident of Zanzibar who first brought it to the attention of zoological science. It is now classified as an endangered species and in the mid-1990s was adopted as the flagship species for conservation in Zanzibar. The population is still decreasing, and conservationists are attempting to work with the local government to devise a proper, effective strategy to protect the population and habitat. Challenges include the species' habitat, which is limited to the archipelago. The species has been reclassified three times; it was previously in the genus Colobus, then in the genus Procolobus, and later in the genus Piliocolobus.
Changuu Island (also known as Kibandiko, Prison or Quarantine Island) is a small island 5.6 km northwest of Stone Town, Unguja, Zanzibar. The island is around 800m long and 230m wide at its broadest point. The island saw use as a prison for rebellious slaves in 1860s and also functioned as a coral mine.
Stone Town is one of the oldest living Swahili towns in East Africa. It's unique winding, narrow streets are adorned with (some crumbling) beautiful buildings. Established by Arab slave and spice traders in the early 19th century, Stone Town is the cultural heart of Zanzibar.
