For anyone who's SUP'd around the beautiful Hairy Lemon Uganda islands the wildlife need our help as they're about to lose their home...

So many of our lives have been enriched by the wildlife on the Hairy Lemon island and the Nile River… now it needs our help.

The trees have been cleared on the mainland, on the surrounding islands, and the animals that survived the chopping are all gathered on the main Hairy Lemon island awaiting their fate.

There is an emergency plan to get a specialist team to do the wildlife relocation, but the trapping and relocation costs money. This relocation needs to happen within the next few days as the last of the trees get cleared. Without this relocation the monkeys and other wildlife that has called hairy lemon home face hunting for bush meat, starvation, drowning from the imminent flooding, or possibly even being traded on the illegal wildlife market. Some may attempt to swim for it, but with the surrounding area as farmland and villages, nothing will survive for long.

It’s not just the animals that have given to us over the years, the Hairy Lemon, and the river in general wouldn’t have been the same without the jungle and trees lining the river banks. We want to protect and reforest some remaining sections of the Nile River to create a good, sustainable habitat for animals and birds in the long term.

Bubugo Conservation Trust has a great reforestation initiative involving local communities. The plan involves combining reforestation, fruit trees, and using bee hives and honey to create long term, sustainable income to improve general wellbeing in the surrounding villages, and to incentivize leaving the trees in the ground, and allowing the wildlife on the Nile’s riverbanks to thrive for many years.

So many of our lives have been enriched by the river, the wildlife and the amazing people on the Nile River here in Uganda. Here is a chance for us all to pay back a little for all those special memories and experiences, both to the wildlife and the local communities.

Hairy Lemon Uganda will match the first $500 of donations, to help with the wild life relocation. Kayak the Nile will match the next $1000 to go towards reforesting the riverbanks.

For more info on what we are trying to do and why listen in to episode 9 of Sam's podcast here: http://www.climatechangeunfolding.com/episode9/

If you can spare a little money, we’d be very grateful for a donation, if you can’t, we’d love a social media share:

Thanks for being an amazing community and for supporting Uganda’s wildlife and people!

Update from our sister company Kayak the Nile on the upcoming Isimba dam flooding part of our beautiful Nile River...

Confirmation of Isimba flooding date!

We've just had confirmation from a senior engineer working on Isimba that the project will be completed either in the last week of August or the first week of September. This is the most concrete response we've ever had from these guys so although we're feeling sad to lose some of our favourite whitewater we wanted to share the news with you. This means there's only 8 more weeks to surf Nile Special and possibly even less to camp out at the beautiful Hairy Lemon Uganda before they disappear forever.

If you’ve been thinking about making a trip to go and hang out on the Hairy Lemon but not quite made it happen, or wanted to squeeze one last paddle on Nile Special in before it goes, it’s crunch time. Eight weeks to go till the reservoir takes rise!

We have trips running in July and August through our sister company Love it Live it if you want to make that happen, send us a message with any questions, but make it quick!

We're doing our bit this World Environment Day to . Meet our new re-usable water bottles for staff and clients! This is just one of the steps we're taking to becoming single use plastic free this year. Stay tuned for our owner Sam's upcoming Climate Change Unfolding podcast all about single use plastic here on the Nile and the changes we're making as a business to lead the way on removing them. If you can't reuse it, refuse it!
