Lake Mburo is situated in the Ankole sub-region of Uganda, near the town of Mbarara. It is a shallow lake with a maximum depth of approximately 5 meters (16 feet). The lake spans an area of approximately 260 square kilometers and is surrounded by rolling hills, open grasslands, and patches of woodland.
It is the starting point for nature hikes, quad biking, game drives and forest walks. There is also a small shop selling handcrafts and books. Lake Mburo is a natural haven for fauna and flora. The bank teems with animals and birds.
The name Lake Mburo National Park dates back on the story of two biological brothers (Mburo and Kigarama) who lived where the lake Mburo is situated today which was a low lying areas where the Bahima Pastoralists used to graze their cattle's.
Rubanga Forest In Lake Mburo National Game Park. Though small, this tract of forest on the western side of Lake Mburo provides a taste of tropical high forest with a closed canopy and a viewing platform for visitors. It is home to a variety of forest birds; commoner species include; Harrier Hawk.
Still, according to the history of Lake Mburo, the park is underlain by ancient Precambrian metamorphic rocks, and sculptured landscapes, with rolling hills that date back more than 500 million years. It contains an extensive wetland area that harbors several species of mammals and birds, found nowhere else in Uganda.
Lake Mburo National Park experiences a mild climate. Daily temperatures are around 27°C/81°F, with nightly temperatures of 14°C/57°F on average. Rain occurs throughout the year – although June and July get the least amount of rain. December through February also tends to be a period of lesser rainfall.
Lake Mburo has a varied mosaic of habitats and landscapes: forests, rich acacia tree valleys, grass lands and seasonal and permanent swamps. The park is with 370 square km the smallest of Uganda's Savannah national parks.

The best places to watch the shoebill stork up close in Uganda are around the Mabamba Bay marshes on the shores of Lake Victoria and in the Albert Delta, up the Victoria Nile found in Murchison Falls National Park.

Bwindi is open for gorilla trekking all year long, but the best times to go are from June to August and December to February. At these times, the forest trails are drier and therefore less slippery. Also, your chance of a dry gorilla viewing experience is higher during these months.
