African elephants are the largest land mammals on Earth and are found primarily in sub-Saharan Africa.

There are two main species:
1. African Savannah Elephant (Loxodonta africana):
-Found in grasslands, savannas, and forests.
-Larger of the two species, with males weighing up to 6 tons.
-Characterized by large ears shaped somewhat like the African continent, which help regulate their body temperature.

2. African Forest Elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis):
-Smaller and more elusive, living in dense Central and West African forests.
-Distinguished by straighter, downward-pointing tusks and darker skin.

Key Features of African Elephants:
-Social Structure: They are highly social and live in matriarchal herds led by an older female. Males often roam alone or form bachelor groups.

-Communication: Elephants use a variety of sounds, from low-frequency rumbles (that can travel long distances) to trumpeting. They also communicate through body language and seismic signals.

-Diet: Herbivorous, consuming grasses, leaves, bark, and fruits. An adult can eat up to 300 pounds of food per day.

-Conservation Status: Both species face threats from habitat loss and poaching for ivory. The African forest elephant is critically endangered, while the savannah elephant is endangered.

The Crater Lakes Tour south of Fort Portal offers a captivating experience of nature's beauty and geological history. The area is dotted with ancient crater lakes formed by volcanic activity 8,000 to 10,000 years ago. Despite their serene presence today, these lakes were once the result of explosive volcanic eruptions. Some of the lakes are over 400 meters deep, providing not only stunning views but also great opportunities for hiking.

The trails wind through picturesque villages, lush tea plantations, and waterfalls, with a chance to spot local wildlife like monkeys and tropical birds. On a clear day, the majestic Rwenzori Mountains, known as the Mountains of the Moon, can be seen in the distance. These trails also offer a peek into the region’s volcanic past, as the last eruptions occurred as recently as 2,000 BC, coinciding with the construction of the Egyptian pyramids.

Besides hiking, visitors can enjoy swimming in the lakes, taking in panoramic viewpoints, and immersing themselves in the natural beauty and tranquility of the area.

Today was yet another beautiful day for our clients who got to enjoy a visit to some of the crater lakes in Fort Portal while on our Day 9/35 Uganda . Rwanda . Kenya. & Zanzibar safari

We call it a DAY with Nungi Safaris in

Are you planning on ? Well, there are plenty of tourist things to do in Rwanda unlike her small size while on the trip to Rwanda. Rwanda is found in East Africa and covers an area of 26,338 square kilometers.

Rwanda shares borders with Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and Tanzania. The country is known for beautiful hills, volcanoes, mountain gorillas, and handsome people but sadly for also enduring one of the worst genocides in recent history. After the genocide, the government of President Kagame embarked on the difficult task of healing the nation, reconciliation and bringing people together to rebuild their country.

Rwanda is now considered a benchmark for how other African countries can organize their people, curb corruption and set efficient systems even with few resources.
