What an adventure. Starting at the very top, tucked into Uganda’s north eastern corner along the border with South Sudan and Kenya is Kidepo. A lesser known park and compared to the others, so uniquely different to the other landscapes in terms of its biodiversity. Nestled below the magically mauve Napore Ranges which give way to breathtaking, rolling savannahs studded with hills and outcrops. Several species occur here that are not found elsewhere in Uganda such as the cheetah, African wild dog, Lesser Kudu, Karamoja Apalis and a species of crocodile that was only recently identified. In its 555 square miles, 86 species of mammals—including bat-eared fox, striped hyena, aardwolf, jackal - 473 species of birds and 692 plant species have been recorded. This region also includes the main area where the Ik tribe occurs. The Ik are a small farming and hunting community, squeezed between the large, powerful Karimojong and Turkana pastoralist tribes. Kidepo was so special in that it was off the beaten track with a beauty all of her own!✨

JUST IN: Today marks 64 days since we intensified monitoring Julia, a tree-climbing lioness in the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park who we suspected to have given birth.

Her cubs hadn’t been seen until earlier today.

The two healthy cubs were first spotted today close to one of our game drive tracks by some tourists who were out on a safari in Ishasha.

The evidence of this sighting was confirmed by our field teams shortly after.

Throughout this period, our monitoring efforts have been heightened around Julia’s movements and those of her older cub Hope; ensuring that this area is critically safeguarded for the survival of these new additions.

It has been a busy two months as our research and monitoring teams continued to work day and night to get substantial evidence of the birth but the area in which the mother had given birth was very inaccessible and she kept them hidden.

It is very normal for lions to breed in hidden places where they feel their cubs would stand the greatest chance of survival.

During this period, we have continued to intensify our patrols in the area while also working to deter any potential wrong happenings.

The cubs now begin forging their lives under the guidance of mum and their big sister Hope; learning to be the true kings and queens. We wish them a very long life as they join our population of tree climbing lions and sustain the legacy of this critical wilderness.

As they grow, we will still continue to closely monitor them and ensure that Julia, her special cubs and their kind, are given the best chance possible of survival.

Farewell Jesse

Horrible news from the Maasai Mara. Jesse, it’s most famous nomadic male lion, has died in a battle with the Enkoyonai male lions in the Mara North Conservancy.

Jesse was a survivor, an outlaw. A lion who didn’t play by the rules. Who didn’t care about territory borders or rival males. Ever since he left the Offbeat pride in 2016 after the disappearance of his former coalition partner, Jesse roamed the reserve as a nomad. And although this can easily mean the death sentence for many male lions, Jesse not only adapted to the situation, but without much exaggeration perfected the art of living as an independent bachelor. He needed no one but himself to survive. He hunted on his own, he scavenged on his own, he chased away prides and hyena clans to get his fair share. He was aware of his power and so were others.

Over the years he randomly popped up here and there, moved from the Conservancies to the main reserve and back again. Always outsmarting the dominant territory holders or in case of equal numbers facing them straight without fear. His fight with one of the Black Rock males remains just as unforgettable as his legendary attempt to secretly sneak away from a completely clueless Halftail who was just 10 meters away!

In the end Jesse returned to to the very same area where it all had started. Where he had become a dominant male lion for the first and last time, and where he had successfully left offspring within the Offbeat pride. His death makes it full circle.

Jesse, the Mara’s fearless outlaw, died today battling the Enkoyonai male lions. He died a lion death, with his claws out an his teeth bared.

There will never be a lion like him again. He was special. And we will remember that. Always.

Rest easy now.

No-one would dare try to pull that tail...😄 Greetings from the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, one of the only few locations in the world where lions climb trees and laze on fig branches. We wish you a great week ahead.

Bondeni doesn’t think much of the whole ‘personal space’ concept. He has always been a very in-your-face elephant — quite literally! At four years old, he’s no longer lap-sized, though he would certainly try to be if the opportunity presented itself. Instead, Bondeni makes his presence known by using his newfound height to his advantage, often suctioning his entire trunk over his Keepers’ faces. They don’t even blink an eye at these antics; it’s what we’ve come to expect from our extroverted friend!

We rescued Bondeni in 2019. For some reason, the newborn elephant had taken a long trek across the jagged lava fields surrounding the Chyulu Hills, and his tiny feet were covered in painful lacerations.
