Ruwenzori Range, mountain range bordering Uganda and Congo (Kinshasa); the range is thought to be the “Mountains of the Moon” described by the 2nd-century-AD geographer Ptolemy (Claudius Ptolemaeus). The mountains were long thought to be the source of the Nile.

Lying slightly north of the Equator, the Ruwenzori Range has a maximum breadth of 30 miles (50 km) and extends south-north for 80 miles (130 km) between Lake Edward and Lake Albert. The Ruwenzori Range falls steeply westward to the Western Rift Valley, while its descent to the east is more gradual, leading to the uplands of the western part of Uganda.

Unlike most African snow peaks, the Ruwenzori is not of volcanic origin but is a gigantic horst of six separate glaciated masses, reaching a high point in Mount Stanley at Margherita Peak (16,795 feet [5,119 m]). The Rwenzori Range’s largest mountains are separated by passes and deeply cut river valleys that all eventually drain into the Semliki River.
Glaciers and small lakes occur in the upper valleys. The permanent snow line stands at about 14,800 feet (4,511 m) on the east and 15,900 feet (4,846 m) on the west. The mountain summits are often hidden in cloud cover, created periodically by moist airstreams from the Atlantic and Indian oceans.
Queen Elizabeth (Ruwenzori) National Park (established 1952) is located east of Lake Edward and south of the Ruwenzori Range in southwestern Uganda.

The Ruwenzori is economically important for copper and cobalt deposits, mined at Kilembe, Uganda. Hydropower for mining is provided by the Mubuku, the range’s largest river. The Amba and Konjo peoples of the lower eastern slopes are mainly cultivators of beans, sweet potatoes, and bananas.

Ssese Islands are an archipelago of eighty-four islands in the northwestern part of Lake Victoria in Uganda.
The Ssese islands are a magical secretive part of Uganda to go to if you need to relax after your game drives, hikes and primate treks in the forests. They are 84 beautiful tropical islands in the northwestern shore of Lake Victoria, the second biggest lake on in Africa which is also shared among Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. Ssese islands have lovely white sand-beaches where you’ll chill as you watch the sunset. The islands are the best places for boating, fishing for Nile perch, horseback riding, hiking, motor boat riding, and birding.

These islands can be accessed by taking a boat, a ferry or flying there and there are lodges that provide luxury and mid-range accommodation facilities. You’ll enjoy your stay at these comfortable lodges which most times have night fires.

The Ssese islands are listed among the top ten world’s best secret islands by lonely planet because of their stunning sandy beaches, birds, exotic plants, beautiful flowers, the tropical forest and the hospitable people and their culture at the island. There are many palm trees which make the place look a totally different part from the rest of Uganda.

Falls area is the starting point for many hikes up Mt. Elgon. The most popular route starts in Budadiri and follows the Sasa trail to the summit and then descends down the Sipi trail back into the Sipi Falls. Hikes around the falls offer stunning views of the Karamoja plains, Lake Kyoga, and the slopes of Mt. Elgon.

The Sipi River is named after the ‘Sep’, a plant indigenous to the banks of the River. Resembling a type of wild banana, Sep is a medicinal plant, the translucent green frond with a bolt of crimson rib is used for treating measles and fever.

The Sipi Falls area is famous for locally grown Bugisu Arabica coffee. Bugisu Arabica only grows at an altitude of between 1,600 and 1,900 metres. Coffee tours are organized through guides with knowledge of coffee farming, processing and roasting. Profits from this go towards community projects.
