St. Joseph's cathedral, Gulu. This great cathedral built in the 1910s sheltered many people during the bad times of northern Uganda war. A dimple on the western wall close to the roof tells a tale of difficult times when an RPG hit it. Two bishops corpses well preserved lay to rest there to date. As kids we were always curious to see the bodies of these bishops but I never set eyes on any as they were kept away from public viewing a few years before. Just next to it is a place where the horrifying story of world war II saw a well filled with concrete to prevent the advancing British troops from setting at the cathedral premises.

In 1889, his son Mwanga II of Buganda, donated that land to the French Catholic missionaries (White Fathers) who were setting up the nascent Catholic church in the country, at that time. In 1914 the missionaries began constructing a modern cathedral at Lubaga (Rubaga). Construction was completed in 1925. It's the oldest Roman Catholic Church in Uganda
