WE HAVE A NEW BABY! 🦍

Adult female Tomvi of the Mukiza mountain gorilla family in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park gave birth to a healthy baby on Valentines Day (14/2/2023).

Our field teams have for the last few days been trying to get an image of the baby especially with how tightly guarded she’s been by her protective father and mother. This new birth means that there are now 19 individuals in this family.

This little bundle of joy is already showing signs of being an active and curious fella and is a testimony to the many years of successful conservation.

Please leave a congratulatory note 😄 for the family in the comments section below.

Season's greetings from the newest member of the Busingye mountain gorilla group in Rushaga, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, born on 17th December 2022.

The mother and father are in perfect health and have been very protective of their new baby which is why its taken long for our field team to get a photo of the baby.

The mother's name is Kafugwe which translates to mean 'Stinging Nettle' (a plant that is predominant in the area where she gave birth).

This new birth brings the total tally of family members to 15. Join us in celebrating our latest addition to our Bwindi family

International Vulture Awareness day falls on the first Saturday of September every year to highlight the essential role that vultures play in the ecological health of the environment. Although they aren’t the prettiest of birds or sing the sweetest melody, these scavengers are very critical to nature, playing a vital role in the food chain, acting as nature’s very effective garbage disposal mechanism. Not only do they clean the remains of dead animals, removing toxins from the environment, but they also signal to other scavengers the presence of a carcass, speeding up the cleanup process.

In recent years, vulture populations across Africa have declined catastrophically. Seven out of the 11 African vulture species are now at risk of extinction.

The UWA - UCF Carnivore & Scavenger strategy incorporates law enforcement, prey and lion protection, human-wildlife conflict mitigation, habitat and landscape improvement and establishing UWA's capacity.

UWA and UCF staff installed satellite tracking of sample vultures across Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, and Kidepo Valley National Parks, and the units are directly integrated into the UWA protected area operations monitoring system, EarthRanger, providing incredible real-time and long-term monitoring for management and research purposes, within and beyond Uganda.

The programme is generously supported by IUCN Save Our Species and co-funded by EU Partnerships.

Mountain Gorilla baby news! Uganda Wildlife Authority is delighted to announce our latest addition, a gorilla born to 18-year old adult female Murema of the Kutu group in Rushaga - Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

The baby was born on 15th July 2022 but the mother has been quite protective of her young. This is thus the first mobile image by our field team of the baby and mother - both very healthy and enjoying their wild forested home.

Murema whose name means ‘lame’, due to a natural handicap in one of her fingers, now has welcomed two successful births. Her first baby called Dunia who was born five years ago is growing fast.

With this new birth, the Kutu gorilla family has grown to 21 members under the able leadership of Silverback Ndugu. Ndugu loosely translates to mean ‘brother’ in English and he’s indeed very welcoming to tourists on gorilla tracking safaris.

Leave a message or a gorilla emoji in the comments section as you join us in congratulating Murema and wishing her baby a long and healthy life in the wild jungles of Uganda.

LETS GO GORILLA TRACKING..

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park undisputedly hosts the biggest population of mountain gorillas in any park in the world. This is primarily due to several years of successful conservation efforts. Note that our gorilla permit rates remain unchanged in our new conservation tariff.

A Bengal tiger is able to take down prey that is twice it's size but it usually chooses prey that is about its own size or smaller. It always finds an area in which to hide, often by a water source and at night, and wait patiently for their prey to come their way.
