NAMIREMBE HILL

Namirembe Hill is considerd to be the oldest of Kampala's seven hills.

It dates back in the early 13th Century when Kintu, the first Kabaka of Buganda established his Kibuga on the summit.

The hill was then reserved exclusively for royalty until 1891 when the Protestants exploited Mwanga's imploding authority to occupy the site.

The Church Missonary Society's first three decades on Namirembe is one of the most perseverance.

A tempolary cathedral built in the near by swamp was abandoned in 1891 and left to fall down.

A replacement was built on top of the hill but after two years in 1892, this blew down and fell into the swamp after its supporting poles were eaten by termites.

1n 1904 another cathedral was also eaten up by termites.

In 1901 using bricks and thatch, it was sruck by lightening and burned down in 1910.

In 1910, the most ambitious structure was established and completed in 1919 and it still stands today.

KAMPALA, A CITY OF 7 HILLS.

OLD KAMPALA
It takes some imagining today, but the irredeemably urban landscape to the east of Namirembe was once a popular hunting ground for the Kabakas.

Wildlife still abounded in the vicinity in 1890s when Captain Fredrick Lugard of the Imperial British East African Company (IBEAC) established his Fort on a grassy knoll known locally as "Kasozi Ka Empala"- the Hill of the Impalas.

The name was soon shortened and corrupted to give us Kampala and as a city of that name spread outwards to cover neighbouring hills, the original Kasozi Ka Empala became known as Old Kampala.

Old Kampala Hill is one of the modern Kampala's most obvious landmarks due to the huge copper dome that draws the eye to a monumental mosque complex on its summit.

In 1970s, after converting to Islam to gain support from North Africa and Arabia, President Idi Amin gifted the hill to the local Musilm community and the National Mosque sits on this hill.

KILEMBE MINES & THE KASESE RAILWAY

In 1951, the East African Railway and Harbours Corporation (EAR&H) began work on an extension of the Uganda Railway to the Rwenzori Mountain, 300km west of Kampala. Five years later, Sir Edward Mutesa, the Kabaka of Buganda and Sir Andrew Cohen the Governor of Uganda, boarded a train in Kampala in late 1956 for over night journey to a new railhead at Kasese. There, the following morning they met Omukama Rukidi of Toro who declared the line open and to celebrate the arrival of the railway in his Kingdom, named the locomotive, 'Batoro' (People of Toro).

Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill was the Bristish prime minister twice (1940-1945) and (1951-1955).
In 1907 on his African Journey, he famously described Uganda as "A Pearl". Indeed, from space much of Uganda has got great beautful landscapes of rich flora and fauna, the lush mountains, water bodies, rivers and the rich diverse culture with the naturla wellcoming hospitality. Indeed Uganda is the Pearl of Africa.

NAKAIMA TREE (THE WITCH TREE).
WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS MYSTERIOUS TREE????
It is found in Mubende district, 2km from Mubende town on top of Mubende hill. Legends say Nakaima was the wife to Ndahura the first Muchwezi king of the Empire of Kitara. When the Bachwezi disappeared and became revered through the Bachwezi cult, Nakaima became her husband's intermediary.

The site is a very active shrine and is visited throughout the year. Supplicants put their offertories in the 20 or so root buttresses that form the base of the tree to request for fertility, riches, and healing of ailments.
