How can Uganda benefit from the air traffic boom in East Africa?
The East African region is witnessing a remarkable recovery in air passenger numbers after the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the region’s annual traffic rose 38.7% in 2023 versus the prior year1. Ethiopia and Kenya are leading the way, with their airports handling the majority of the flights in the region, as shown in the image below.
However, Uganda is lagging behind, with its annual traffic still 22.1% below the 2019 levels2. This is a missed opportunity for Uganda, which has a lot to offer to tourists, such as its 10 national parks, diverse wildlife, rich culture, and hospitable people.
So, how can Uganda tap into the potential of the air traffic arriving in Nairobi and Addis Ababa to boost its local tourism? Here are some suggestions:
1. Strengthen partnerships with airlines operating in Nairobi and Addis Ababa for seamless connections to Ugandan destinations. This could include offering incentives, such as reduced landing fees, to encourage more flights to Uganda.
2. Enhance marketing efforts in these cities showcasing Uganda’s unique tourist attractions. This could include creating online campaigns, participating in trade fairs, and collaborating with influencers and media outlets.
Improve airport facilities and services to offer a competitive edge. This could include upgrading the infrastructure, enhancing the security, and providing better customer service.
3. Collaborate with travel agencies in Nairobi and Addis Ababa to include Ugandan destinations in their packages. This could include offering discounts, commissions, and special deals to attract more customers.
By implementing these strategies, Uganda could increase its share of the regional air traffic and tourism market, and reap the economic and social benefits of this sector. Uganda has a lot of potential to become a top tourist destination in East Africa, and it should not let this opportunity fly by.
