Mountain gorilla trekking in Rwanda. What a privilege to be able to visit these beautiful creatures in the wild! Once on the brink of extinction, there are now an estimated 1,063 in these mountains, and of those, there are 12 families that have been gently habituated to accept the presence of humans. If you find them, you are strictly to spend no more than an hour there, to minimize the impact and keep them relaxed. The exceptional government of Rwanda is very careful to not sell too many permits, because, thankfully, they care more about their gorillas than money.

There are about twelve families living in the Volcanoes National Park that are fully habituated and available for visits by the public (whilst others are habituated for scientific research purposes only). Each family consists of at least one Silverback (but sometimes as many as four), along with several females and a group of youngsters.
