I loved seeing this young elephant 🐘 with his tiny tusks. Tusks are actually teeth, incisors to be exact. He does look like a little dracula πŸ§›β€β™‚οΈ elephant. During their first year, an elephants’ tusks will replace it’s milk teeth. The tusks extend from a socket in the skull. They are very important for a variety of tasks, including prying bark from trees, digging for water, and fighting other elephants πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¬ Murchison Falls. ChrisAustriaSafaris {dot} com

There is a healthy population of hippos πŸ¦› in the Kazinga Channel- southwest πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¬ These animals are the 3rd largest land mammal, (after elephants and white rhinos) They grow to between 10.8 and 16.5 feet (3.3 to 5 meters) long and up to 5.2 feet (1.6 m) tall at the shoulder. The average female weighs around 3,000 lbs. (1,400 kilograms), while males can weigh 3,500 to 9,920 lbs. (1,600 to 4,500 kg), Hippos are closely related to cetaceans (whales and dolphins)

Valley’s magical golden light in the early morning hours is stunning. The wildlife in this northeast region of πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¬ is spectacular. I love photographing the powerful and majestic Cape Buffalo πŸƒ Even when I see large herds, each individual has a distinct look. In bulls, their horns meet in the middle of their heads forming a continuous bone shield referred to as a β€œboss”. ChrisAustriaSafaris.com

Licking minerals on the ground or drinking water is not easy for giraffes πŸ¦’ because of their long legs. The arteries above the heart are muscular and elastic so they can pump blood against gravity to the brain. Lower arteries are narrower with thick walls to bear higher pressures and to prevent blood from pooling. Their arteries have valves that close when they lower their head, and open when they raise it. This position with their backs turned does make them vulnerable to lions who will hunt them. I photographed these giraffes in Kidepo Valley, northeast πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¬ ChrisAustria.com

This was the most gorgeous sunset at Queen Elizabeth National Park in southwest πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¬ Landscape photography is like a Zen meditation for me. On this night, I was feeling so much gratitude that I live in such a beautiful country. All my worries were dissipated as I photographed and I felt hopeful about my future. I am so much in love with the African skies. Thank you to Kasenyi Safari Camp for taking us to this remarkable location ChrisAustriaSafaris.com

I love watching adolescent lions 🦁 Their awkwardness is endearing, but they also possess an inborn swag and confidence like this young male here. He has a lot to learn about survival in the African savanna. I hope to have the opportunity to photograph him for many years here in the Kasenyi plains of Queen Elizabeth National Park, western πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¬ ChrisAustriaSafaris.com

I was amazed how beautiful Lake Albert is, located outside of Hoima, Bunyoro Kingdom in western πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¬ I was here to celebrate World Tourism Day. The lake is shared between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and located on the Rift Valley. Lake Albert is part of the complicated system of the upper Nile. Its main sources are the White Nile, ultimately coming from Lake Victoria to the southeast, and the Semliki River, which issues from Lake Edward to the southwest. The Lake Albert was formed about 10-12 million years ago. It was previously known as β€œMwitanzige” by the Banyoro and Batooro, as well as other peoples who have been populated the region for centuries before the colonial age. ChrisAustriaSafaris.com

One of the first things I noticed about this lioness was how beautiful her teeth are. I was hosting guests from France πŸ‡«πŸ‡· on safari in Murchison Falls, northwest πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¬ They wanted nothing more than to see a lion. With the expertise of our wildlife ranger, we located this mother with her cub. We were all completely thrilled. ChrisAustriaSafaris.com

I was very happy that this young giraffe πŸ¦’ posed for me at a close distance while I photographed her at Murchison Falls, northwest πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¬ She has the most beautiful orange spot patterns. Like our fingerprints, a baby giraffe’s patterns are one-of-a-kind. The calf inherits its mother’s spot patterns. Their spots can also aid body temperature regulation and identify other giraffes in their family.

This elephant 🐘 was sniffing us out at Queen Elizabeth National Park πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¬ These animals have a very keen sense, detecting water sources up 19.2 km (12 mi) away. Nostrils are located at the tip of the trunk as you can see here and function in breathing, smelling, and drawing water in to sq**rt into the mouth. ChrisAustriaSafaris.com

This was an Epic moment. When I started photographing this lioness in a tree, she roared at me aggressively, baring her deadly teeth. But I eventually gained her trust and she relaxed, watching me peacefully as I took more photos of her. It was an intimate experience here at Murchison Falls, northwest πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¬ There is a silent, inner communication that we can have with the wild animals we share this earth with. I learned this from my career working with the big cats 🦁 ChrisAustriaSafaris.com

I’m always amazed how African leopards πŸ† are so powerful and elegant. We were very fortunate to see a few of these big cats this week at Murchison Falls in northwest πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¬ It took patience and determination in the hot sun, scanning the trees with our wildlife ranger. Once this beautiful leopard was located, it took a lot of time with my lens focused, waiting for him to lift his head. This individual has the most stunning spot patterns.
