The noisy territorial calls of the hippo 🦛 creates a signature soundtrack to Africa’s wildlife rivers and aquatic areas and the Kazinga Channel is no exception. The channel and the park (Queen Elizabeth NP) have one of the largest hippo populations in Africa. These large herbivores lead a double life, spending day time on water and wallowing, by night they leave and disperse to feed (grazing). UWA ranger Rebecca is explaining in this video why the zebra’s have the stripes. She informed our clients that there are three main reasons: 1) thermoregulation – the white stripes reflect the heat while the black ones are able to absorb, it keeps them at the perfect temperature 2) Musquito repellent - flies that bite and suck blood are a common and horseflies and tsetse flies also transmit diseases like sleeping sickness, African horse sickness, and the potentially fatal equine influenza. The thin hair of a zebra would pose little barrier to biting flies. 3) Protection – with the stripes the zebra’s look like one big animal from a distance for predators as they can’t see the individual animals.
