Dr. Fred recently visited Mubare group in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and found two new babies in the group! Both Kikombe and Mitunu had tiny newborns clutched to their chests during his recent health check. There are now five infants in Mubare group and each baby is visually in good health and thriving!

Thank you team for the good work you are doing.

We just received word from RDB trackers that Zirikana, a 7-year-old male mountain gorilla in Umubano group, is caught in a wire snare in Volcanoes National Park. This is the second time this poor guy has been caught in a snare. (Gorilla Doctors freed Zirikana from a snare in January 2011 when he was just 3-years-old.) Drs. Jean Felix is assembling the intervention team now and they will trek up the mountain first thing in the morning to remove the snare and administer treatment. More soon.

Wonderful news! This morning Muyisa (aka Ihirwe, pictured facing the camera) was introduced to the social group at GRACE. She was calm and received a very friendly greeting from the rest of the gorillas, including hugs! This was Muyisa's first time to be with gorillas since she was captured from the wild in 2011. We are thrilled for her! Thank you to all of our partners who worked very hard to make her transfer from Rwanda to DRC possible and to Gorilla Doctors and Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International who cared for Muyisa before she came to GRACE. For more on her transfer in May: http://gracegorillas.org/2014/05/27/ihirwe-comes-to-grace/

Wishing Karibu, the young gorilla a quick recovery and Kudos to the team trying to intervene.

Wishing Karibu, the young gorilla a quick recovery and Kudos to the team trying to intervene.

Karibu, a young silverback in Nkuringo group in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, has been moving slowly behind the group for several days. Dr. Fred checked on him yesterday and found that the silverback had an infected wound on his abdomen, but was still actively feeding. The dominant silverback and other group members were very suspicious and agitated, so Dr. Fred was unable to dart Karibu with antibiotics. We are going to give the group a few days to calm down and Drs. Fred, Methode, and Jan will trek to the group Friday for further assessment and a possible veterinary intervention. More soon.

A sad day in the Gorilla community, another Gorilla dies!

A sad day in the Gorilla community, another Gorilla dies!

Despite our best efforts, we sometimes lose one of our gorilla patients. After multiple interventions and a series of vaccine treatments, we are saddened to report that elderly female mountain gorilla Gashangi lost her battle with melanoma last week. This was the first known case of melanoma in a gorilla and “we hope, through further diagnostics on her tissues, that we can learn more about this tumor so that we might be able to help the next great ape fighting this terrible cancer.”
