Did you know?
That, there are two species of hippos; the large/common hippo and the smaller relative, the pygmy hippo. Hippos are the third-largest living land mammal, after elephants and white rhinos.
Hippos are herbivorous and are semiaquatic mammal, they love water, which is why the Greeks named them the “river horse.” They spend up to 16 hours a day submerged in rivers, lakes and swamps to keep their massive bodies cool under the hot African sun.
A male hippo can reach lengths of 10.8 - 16.5 feet, and weigh up to 9,920 pounds, while females weigh up to 3,000 pounds with a total life span of 40-50years in the wild.
Hippos consume around 100-110 pounds of grass each night when they leave the water at sunset, they mate and give birth in the water to one calf every two years with a gestation period that lasts eight months.
