The best days in this biz happen when I get to be a part of someone's first fish on a fly. Today we got that feeling twice. From casting practice in the yard, to floating a couple short stretches of scenic river, illuminated by autumn leaves beneath a blue bird sky. On their way to many more...!

Tomorrow - Saturday - we will have a booth at the APPALACHIAN STRONG Music Festival, a benefit for the Damascus Strong Relief Fund. We have donated a full day trip to the silent auction, of which all proceeds will go to the relief effort. At our booth we will also host a raffle for a FULL DAY GUIDED FLY FISHING TRIP ($20), and a LEARN TO FLY FISH TRIP ($10), of which, 50% of all proceeds will go towards the relief efforts. This will be a great way to help support Damascus, do some fishing, and hear some stellar music! Hope to see you there...

Howdy friends. Thanks to everyone who has reached out to offer their time and help with cleaning up sections of river!! Based on the majority of people's availability, we have our first VOLUNTEER RIVER CLEANUP date set.

When: Friday Oct. 25
Time: 9am - ?
Location: Private property access several miles below Damascus. Email us if you can make it, and we'll send you the meet location.

Temps Thursday night dropped into the mid-30s, which made the fish lethargic for us Friday, but they still need to pack on the calories for winter, and this chunker couldn't resist the 5 inch Leggy Boi. Howdy friends! Boy, the rivers are shaping up for excellent autumn fishing! We are also working with our pal Tony of Miller’s Mountain Anglers who is leading the front of collaborating volunteers with the United Way group. We're looking for some folks who would be game to help out with some river cleanup. As you can imagine, there's a lot of debris along the shorelines, plus some potential hazards midstream that could be dangerous for future floaters and anglers. If you'd like to get involved, we could sure use the extra hands. Send us an email with a few different dates and times that would work for you. Whether it's for an hour or five, every little bit will help return our rivers to the beautiful fisheries we know and love.

Yes, we ARE OPEN for business, and so are the majority of other guides in the region. The Virginia Creeper Trail has 'Reversed the Ride', so now you can see it from Abingdon to near Damascus. Nearby, the Mendota Trail and Salt Trail are also opening the majority of their mileage. Bike rentals, shuttle services and lodging are ready for you. This continues to be a spectacular region for your autumn retreat...

Howdy friends. First off, thank you to everyone who has reached out to check on us these past few days, and further thanks to our wonderful clients who have been more than understandable about needing to shuffle around trip dates. We were fortunate that the majority of the storm dead ended about 20 miles south of us. We received heavy rains and winds, with minor flooding, but no damage. As you likely already know, many communities in the region have sustained unimaginable damage. As we’ve been driving around with donations and helping with the cleanup, I have been overwhelmed by the generosity of people helping people. There are so many unsung heroes in this disaster.

As we begin to transition out of the worst of this disaster, it is time to start thinking about business again. Both as an attempt at returning to normalcy, but also, simply put, because the economy of this region relies heavily on tourism, lodging, dining and the arts.

The majority of our lodging partners are reopened for business, and the majority of our rivers will return to good fishing conditions by this weekend. There are many miles of biking trails that have been cleared for use. The autumn colors are beginning to show. We are ready to serve you.

Hurricane Helene has spread her mighty reach inland and we have received a much needed several inches of rain in the past 24 hours, with more still falling. There will be ample time to prepare while we wait for the rivers to balance out and we begin planning for what will become excellent autumn fishing conditions.

Fun-sized bronzie from a recent scouting trip to observe water levels. Topwater bite is still strong. Rivers will have high turbidity from this rain, but be ready, after it clears we'll be game on time...!

So this was a first snapping turtle on the fly for my boat! She came up for a froggy popper, swiped it with her front paw and hooked herself. We fought it soft and slow until it was close enough for me to cut the leader. As she dove back down, she swatted at the fly with her other paw and released it. The fly floated back to the surface and was recovered to fish again. Things that happen on the river... 👌

What better memory than spending a day fly fishing in the rain with your gramps... I was absolutely impressed with these two. From starting the day with a casting lesson in the yard during the pouring rain, to continuing to fish through a spectacular deluge - they kept their spirits high, had some fun, made some jokes, and everybody caught fish.
