Casting forwad to this April. We're thrilled to be hosting a fly fishing course as part of the Hungry Mother State Park Fish-On Academy!
Registration is limited. Information and sign-ups link below.

Let's go fishing with friends and family with our Fish-On Academy. This three-session workshop will be held April 3, 10 and 19.
Learn the basics of fishing or refresh your skills right along with Hungry Mother staff, Friends of Hungry Mother, Riverfeet Fly Fishing staff, and Department of Wildlife Resources fishing experts. You must pre-register one time for all three events at 276-781-7400.
If you attend all three events, you will go home with a Virginia resident freshwater fishing license, a fishing pole, and a tackle box with everything you will need to fish on your own. The fee for this workshop is $20 per participant.
Sometimes people do not feel they can attend events due to no childcare. Any children 4 years and up can attend fun fishing activities on site with a naturalist while participants perfect their new skills.

HIRING FLY FISHING GUIDE (2025 season)

Our guide team is growing for the 2025 season! Do people say you’re “Super Fishy” and you take that as a compliment? Is the ability to “Think like a fish” one of your lifetime goals? Do you love to teach and entertain? You may be the right fit to join our team!

Must be knowledgeable on freshwater river/stream fly fishing tactics, specifically trout and smallmouth bass. No professional guiding experience required, we are happy to train the right person. Our highest priority with this position is a candidate with great people skills who enjoys teaching and is highly dependable with the ability to work in a variety of weather conditions without any supervision.

Our guides operate as (1099) independent professionals.

This is a flexible position with the option to only accept trips on days you are available. However, once you accept a trip, it is imperative that you are committed to work that day.

Overview of duties/responsibilities:

- Communication with clients or Riverfeet Fly Fishing to plan trips based on level of skill, weather and river conditions. This includes phone calls, emails and text messages.

- Gear maintenance and preparation. We expect our clients have access to high quality rods, reels, lines and flies. Our guide team is eligible to receive pro discounts from top manufacturers.

- Must have reliable transportation that is kept clean and presentable for picking up clients and traveling to/from fishing locations.

- Ability to train entry level fly fishing skills.

- Work independently in remote backcountry locations in a variety of weather conditions.

- Skilled at wading in flowing water.

- Ability to operate a drift boat/fishing raft is a plus, but not required. We do offer wade-only trips, and are willing to train boat operation skills.

- Must maintain a patient and empathetic attitude at all times, with a high focus on safety.

- Must be certified in First-Aid and CPR.

- Must have valid Virginia Fishing License

So this was a first snapping turtle on the fly for my boat! She came up for a froggy popper, swiped it with her front paw and hooked herself. We fought it soft and slow until it was close enough for me to cut the leader. As she dove back down, she swatted at the fly with her other paw and released it. The fly floated back to the surface and was recovered to fish again. Things that happen on the river... 👌

What better memory than spending a day fly fishing in the rain with your gramps... I was absolutely impressed with these two. From starting the day with a casting lesson in the yard during the pouring rain, to continuing to fish through a spectacular deluge - they kept their spirits high, had some fun, made some jokes, and everybody caught fish.
