~History Monday~

In the Western side of Stanly County exists the epitome of small-town charm, the Town of Oakboro. With a population of about 2,200, Oakboro can be found just four miles off of Highway 24/27 and about forty-five minutes East of Charlotte. The town has its beginnings with the arrival of the railroad in 1913, with the first passenger train stopping at the new Furr City depot which was named after the previously existing C.C. Furr’s store. Before the railroad, the store and Ellis Thomas’ blacksmith shop were the only proof of a soon-to-be thriving town.

For a time, the community was called “Five Roads,” as it was located at the meeting of five roads. However, in 1915, the town was officially incorporated and named the Town of Oakboro. Early maps showed Oakboro to be a 320-acre plot of land with Main Street running down the middle as a center for the surrounding rural life. Travelers and local farmers alike traveled along the five roads and Main Street to transport produce, cotton, lumber, and many others to either sell or trade. Although, with the addition of the railroad, these goods travelled even faster throughout Stanly County and, often, further out to Charlotte and Raleigh.

The Town of Oakboro remained the same until the 1990’s when the population started to rise from 600 to over 1,000. Not only did the population grow, the town annexations grew the town to over 683 acres and it has continued to expand.

Today, along Main Street, you can find the revitalized buildings of the 1920’s and 30’s in the downtown area with great restaurants, unique museums, an old-time hardware store, even a rebuilt railroad depot and all of the small-town charm you can handle. The Oakboro Cruise-In has helped popularize the area as one of the largest cruise-ins in North Carolina bringing hundreds of people and cars to the area each month. Enjoy a day trip to this amazing little town and take a stroll down Main street, talk with the locals in the shops and immerse yourself in small town charm!

~History Monday~

Located at 343 North Second Street in Downtown Albemarle sits the Julius Clegg Hall House and Grounds, the iconic Colonial Revival-style brick house known for its historic charm. The home was designed in late 1911 by Louis Humbert Asbury, a Charlotte architect, and was constructed in 1912-1913 by Locke Anderson Moody, a prominent Albemarle builder. Also involved in the construction and design of the home was Daniel Jasper Hatley, the head of Albemarle’s Hatley Concrete Works. The home was especially known for its impressive gardens and grounds, which included still-remaining historic plants produced in the later year of 1923.

The home was designed for Dr. Julius Clegg Hall, he of whom originally purchased the lot in 1910. Later, in 1922, Hall purchased a like-sized lot next to his own in which a new pleasure garden was added into his existing grounds. The home then housed Dr. Hall, Mrs. Hall, and their daughter until Dr. Hall’s death in early October of 1930. Their daughter, Evelyn Hall Smith, moved into the residence with her family with her widowed mother in 1943, subsequently Mrs. Hall remained in the home until her death in 1955. Evelyn remained at the residence the longest, until her death in May of 1997.

The home was then passed through the family, and later into the hands of a few owners down the line. However, little to no changes were made to the historic home other than a few non-intrusive additions such as maintenance-warranted replacements, additional rooms or dining areas, added doors, small changes to the gardens, and a refitted kitchen. All in all, the Julius Clegg Hall House and Grounds reflect the careful, appreciative attitude the owners held for the survival of such a historic family home. Now, Hall House and Grounds (HH&G) is owned by Mr. and Mrs. David and Brenda Scarboro, who began the restoration and renovation of the home in 2017 with the purpose of providing Stanly County with a unique venue for events. Their daughter, Anne Scarboro Brand, continues her parent’s legacy and wish for the home alongside HH&G general manager John T. Williams. The Hall House & Gardens, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is a unique piece of Stanly County history.

Visit Stanly County

For the ultimate adventure, take a ‘night of the full moon’ guided kayak tour through dreamlike stretches of the P*e Dee River. Later, laze by your own campfire on the slopes of Morrow Mountain. In the morning, bait a line and compete with ospreys and bald eagles for that big one. Then ramp up the pace and water ski on Lake Tillery or Badin Lake, bicycle along a Scenic Byway or hike a trail through the serene forests of Morrow Mountain.

For the outdoor adventurer, Morrow Mountain State Park is Stanly County’s jewel in the crown. Rising to a height of 936 feet (not strictly a mountain), the peak offers stunning views of the Piedmont. The park attracts 400,000 visitors a year from all over the southeastern United States and its 4,742 acres accommodate them with ease. Here one can choose from a long list of adventures, from camping in one of the 106 campsites or 6 rustic vacation cabins, to hiking miles of well-maintained trails. A large swimming pool offers a cool break on a hot day. And don’t miss a visit to the Dr. Francis Kron homestead. One of the first medical doctors to settle in the Piedmont, his office, infirmary and greenhouse appear much as they did in the 1870’s. At the boat landing you can put in your own craft or rent a canoe or rowboat to explore the Yadkin/P*e Dee River.

Dams on this river have created large lakes that provide endless recreational possibilities. In the northeast corner of the county, Badin Lake’s waters cover 5,350 acres and its 115 mile shoreline encompasses the upscale Uwharrie Point community in the north and the quaint village of Badin in the south. With swimming areas, boat landings, picnic areas, and an abundance of wildlife, the lake is an ideal place for the outdoor enthusiastic.

On the eastern border of the county, Lake Tillery covers over 5,000 acres. At its northern end the lake is bordered by Morrow Mountain State Park and the Uwharrie National Forest. It is here that the tranquil Uwharrie River enters the main stream and the Yadkin River changes its name to P*e Dee. Boating, fishing and water sports are popular with visitors from far and wide.
