Tourism Education

Organizes the annual American Indian Tourism Conference

Provides training and technical assistance to tribal, national, regional and state tourism meetings

Develops interpretive and hospitality curriculum in partnership with the National Park Service and tribal colleges and universities
International and Domestic

Marketing

Annually hosts the American Indian Pavilion at ITB International Travel Trade Show in Berlin, Germany

Annually participates in the U.S. Travel Association’s IPW

Annually collaborates with Brand USA to provide editorial content representing Indian Country in the inspiration guide Discover America, published in nine languages and distributed worldwide

Partnerships with Federal Agencies, Academia and Nonprofit Organizations

Implements an ongoing Cooperative Agreement with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Division of Transportation to provide technical assistance and training in recreational travel and tourism

Participates in the National Park Service Civil War Sesquicentennial and National Park Service Centennial planning

Partners with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, National Park Service, National Geographic Society, Bureau of Indian Affairs and others to share historical information on tribes that will have lasting value to all Americans

Implements a Memorandum of Understanding with all Bureaus of the U.S. Department of the Interior to enhance tribal tourism

Works with The George Washington University’s International Institute of Tourism Studies, Southeast Tourism Society, and Brand USA

Implements a Memorandum of Understanding with Tribal GIS Support Center and membership on National Geographic Society’s Geotourism Stewardship Council

Research and Data

Supports the U.S. Department of Commerce Office of Travel and Tourism Industries

Maps tourism resources and develops GIS data layers in cooperation with Tribal GIS Support Center and the Bureau of Indian Affairs

📣 AIANTA is excited to announce that registration is open for the Sustainable Tourism for Native Nations and Communities Certificate program, starting March 17, 2025. Offered through Arizona State University’s Center for Sustainable Tourism, this online program provides essential tools for developing sustainable tourism plans, with a focus on Native American, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian communities.

🎓The course runs for seven weeks and requires 5-6 hours of effort per week. Participants will receive a certificate of completion upon finishing the program.

💰 Pricing:
AIANTA members pay $2,200; non-members $2,250. A 10% discount is available for groups of three or more from the same organization.

AIANTA will host an informational webinar regarding the Request for Proposals for the Community Wildfire Defense Grant (CWDG) for Tribes, currently open through February 28, 2025. Join our discussion and learn how this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) might assist your community’s tourism, recreation and land use strategies. AIANTA will introduce how your tourism program can be strengthened when potential impacts on land usage are at risk. The goals of the CWDG grant are to follow the National Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy, which are: 1) restore and maintain landscapes, 2) create fire-adapted communities, and 3) improve wildfire response. The webinar will include a question and answer session specific to types of projects, timelines, the application process, and implementation.

📣 AIANTA will be joining the Indigenous Tourism Canada at this year's International Indigenous Tourism Conference in Montréal, Québec February 25-27, as AIANTA CEO Sherry L. Rupert participates on an International Indigenous panel presentation with global leaders.

🌏 Today, and for millennia, Indigenous Nations have been the guardians of the lands and waters of the territory on which the event will be held. Tiohtià:ke (Montreal) is historically known as a gathering place for many Nations and peoples from all over the world. Various Indigenous Nations still inhabit these lands, and IITC wishes to acknowledge the importance of their past, present and future contributions. The event is a gathering of industry professionals, community leaders, entrepreneurs and partners dedicated to promoting and celebrating the richness of Indigenous tourism. The goal is to highlight the diversity of cultures, traditions and tourism experiences offered by Indigenous communities in Canada and beyond.

The Chuckwalla National Monument, located south of the Joshua Tree National Park, has a cultural history for the Cahuilla, Chemehuevi, Mojave, Quechan and Serrano nations. The Sáttítla Highlands National Monument has been a spiritual center for the Pit River, Modoc, Shasta, Karuk and Wintu Tribes for thousands of years

The two monuments will add protections to federal land in the desert of Southern California and the state’s northern mountains.
