There’s so much history in our little town. Thank you Greenbrier Historical Society & North House Museum society.
For the next featured town in our photo series, we have chosen Alderson!
Our first Alderson photo shows the Alderson Academy (also known as the Alderson Baptist Academy) in 1908. The Academy, which was a secondary school, opened its doors in the fall of 1901, holding its first graduation in June of 1903. According to "History Of Education In West Virginia" (Charleston: The Tribune Printing Company, 1904), over 100 boys and girls enrolled in the school's first session.
Despite initial success, the West Virginia Baptist General Association took over the school in 1911 due to growing financial and enrollment instability. This was largely a result of the rising number of free public high schools. To combat this, the school added two-year college level courses, changing its name to the Alderson Junior College in 1918.
In 1924, the four-story brick building most of us know and recognize as the old school was completed. However, after many transitional years, including a merger with Broaddus College in 1931 and the use of the property as a rental facility in the 1990s, the building was finally abandoned before the turn of the century.
