There's nothing more refreshing than taking a walk with nature on a cool crisp day. Coon Creek Nature Preserve is just one of many trails in Tallapoosa County and the Lake Martin area to experience that walk with nature. Located on the banks of the Tallapoosa River, Coon Creek Nature Preserve and Recreation Area offers access to 320 acres of pine-hardwood creek valley that feeds into Yates Lake. A one-mile Overlook Loop Trail and a four-mile Wood Duck Trail are both good for woodland songbirds. The upland portions have Northern Bobwhites, Wild Turkeys, sparrows, Eastern Bluebirds, and other woodland birds. Areas bordering the water provide opportunities to see waterfowl, gulls, terns, Ospreys, and Bald Eagles. Wood Ducks, Belted Kingfishers, herons, and egrets are possibilities all year. Created in part of Forever Wild property, Coon Creek Nature Preserve and Recreation Area is a public recreational site, a nature preserve and an environmental study area with 5 miles of trails and a boat ramp. What a beautiful time of the year to visit Smith Mountain Fire Tower and experience CRATA trails. Smith Mountain is the tallest elevation on Lake Martin’s shoreline. Atop the jagged peak is a historic 90 foot fire lookout tower. The cabin of the tower offers one of the most spectacular panoramic views of Lake Martin. A series of kiosk mounted displays, wayside exhibits, and tower mounted signage describe the natural and cultural history of the area, offering visitors an educational experience in an inspiring outdoor setting. There are four trails surrounding and leading up to the fire tower ranging from 1 mile to 2.6 miles. These trails are a part of the Piedmont Plateau Birding Trail.
