Kip said that this was the year he would cross catching a sturgeon off his bucket list, so we did just that! Went three for 4 last night and 2 for three this morning when a 50’ish inch fish jumped at the back of the boat and threw the hook. We crossed a wide array of sizes off during our outings. Now Kip only needs a super jumbo!

Miyaki, Cho, and Erika had to take a rain delay on their morning, but the weight was worth it, as it allowed just the right timing to strike on a hundred pounder! Chris and Lisa came out for some feisty sturgeon action. They were running and jumping and doing everything they could. We managed to find a gremlin deep in the spool on a long run that allowed one fish to evade us. But we managed to hook up with our biggest fish only minutes afterwards to rectify the situation. During my time away on the James R. Barker, I was fortunate enough to make some real good friends. Today I was able to meet up with one of those friends. Skip brought his wife and son down for some birthday fishing fun. We didn’t find grandma or grandpa, but we sure did find a real good time! Super grateful for the opportunity to make memories with friends new and old while on the water doing what I love.

The evening started with a question. “Have ya ever been reeling one in and have it jump into the boat?” After we landed this sturgeon, Don hooks into a monster! Said monster proceeded to leap halfway into the boat about knocking Don over. We believe the leader managed to snag on the rod track and rip the hook out as the fish went back into the drink. Ouch! Never fun to see a hawg escape our grasp, but it sure was a fitting scenario for the question presented at the start of our evening.
