It is unusual for the Aliceville Museum to host an Authors Series Program in the summer- they are usually from September through April- but this month we have a program we are sure you will want to attend! In the Museum Events Room (104 Broad Street, Aliceville) on Thursday, June 30, from 6:00 to 7:00 pm, we will host author Bert Chamberlain, who is traveling from Minnesota for the program. He will discuss his book 'The Box Turtle' in which he describes his adventures sailing the Mississippi river from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico in a home made sailboat. Here is a little about the author:

Bert Chamberlain was born and raised in Anoka, Minnesota, known as the Halloween Capital of the World. Like many children growing up in a rural area, there were fields to play in, hills to sled down, and lakes and rivers to swim in.

As a child, learning how to swim started in the Mississippi River, which led him to swim in competitions from grade school through his college years. After serving in the Army as an airborne MP, he went to college, where he met Barb and they soon married. Bert and Barb took up sailboat racing with a 16' Mutineer. Later, Bert took his boat with a friend on a short trip to the Mississippi. Water has always been a part of his life.

The spark for adventure started for Bert in the 1950s as he watched Lowell Thomas and his TV show, High Adventure. Some of Bert's adventures include Climbing Mt. Rainier (almost to the top), Mt. Saint Helens, Mt. Fuji, the Grant Teton, and Devils Tower. It was just a matter of time before he fulfilled a personal dream to travel the Mississippi in a handmade sailboat from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. Come and listen to Bert as he describes his story about his sailboat, the Box Turtle!
