Hello Friends of Wissahickon Valley Historical Society and Happy New Year!

There is still time to receive your 2024 tax deduction for your contribution to help the historical society’s Franklinville School. Donations of any size are appreciated!
You can go online to https://www.wvalleyhs.org/donate/donate or mail a check, made out to “WVHS,” to P.O. Box 96, Ambler, PA 19002.
Thank you immensely if you have already contributed!
It is urgent that WVHS raise funds for the one-room 1858 Franklinville School. The structure’s stucco allows water to seep into the walls, and the remedy is exterior painting and waterproofing. Our goal is to raise $10,000. So far, in excess of $2,000 has been raised so far!
In past years, WVHS has added a new roof, repaired the front porch, updated the electricity, and improved the drainage system. Owned by the WVHS, the school is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and considered one of the historic gems of Whitpain Township. The interior depicts a 19th century classroom, shown below. The school, located on Morris Road in Blue Bell is a destination for community meetings, open house events, and school children learning about education in the “good old days.”
WVHS certainly appreciates your help with maintaining our neighborhood’s important historic landmark!

The Ambler Historic Walking Tours are guided by volunteer docents of Ambler Storytellers, a committee of the Wissahickon Valley Historical Society. You will see familiar buildings along Butler Avenue, but with a new appreciation for Ambler's history and its structures!

The tours are conducted twice a month, usually on Saturdays at 3 PM and lasting about 75 minutes. Tour groups are limited to 12 guests, so an online reservation is required. Although there is no charge, a $10 donation to the historical society is suggested. Participants receive a coupon for a complimentary beverage from Tannery Run Brew Works.

Tours will resume in September, so look for announcements!

Happy Birthday Mary Ambler, born on March 24, 1805. Mary was known to think of others, and showed that to everyone when the train wreck occurred near the Fort Washington station in 1856. She went towards the scene of the accident on foot, and took care of the injured. Her heroism and courageous efforts were recognized by the community and the town and train station was named in her honor.

Like most buildings in Ambler, the Opera House was a product of the Keasbey and Mattison Company. It was built around 1889. The first floor housed six stores like Nash's until 1904. In 1928, the building was renovated into a movie theater.

Ambler’s roots go back to 1716 when William and George Harmer purchased 408 acres along the Wissahickon Creek from William Penn.

It didn’t however get its name until 1888 when the borough was incorporated and named after Mary Ambler who turned her home into a hospital to help people injured in a train accident in 1856.

A not-to-miss destination along Butler Ave is the Ambler Theater housed in a Spanish Colonial Revival building designed by Philip Harrison for Warner Bros. in 1928.
