Salish Sea is a term we use all the time to talk about our marine ecosystem, but what exactly is it referring to? Salish Sea is an umbrella term for the inland waterway ecosystem of Washington State and British Columbia. The waters are broken up into three main areas with individual names: The Strait of Georgia, The Puget Sound and The Strait of Juan De Fuca. These connected waters did not have a name until 1988 when marine biologist Bert Webber proposed the name β€œSalish Sea”. Now we use the term Salish Sea time to refer to our inland waterways.
