The are blooming!
Not only do these flowers naturally beautify the road side, they also serve a purpose! Lupines are a legume (though we don’t recommend eating them as this variety is poisonous), and help fix nitrogen levels in the soil. They are excellent pollinators and these Nootka Lupine are hardy perennials that come back every year.
It’s a gift that keeps on giving!
Four babies!!! I repeat FOUR BABIES!!!! We got so lucky to see all four this morning and we’ve got another tour going out to the farm at 2 pm tomorrow (Friday, May 31st) if you haven’t gotten to see these precious calves.

Well… sort of. You see, this is typically the worst 6 weeks in Alaska. We call it "breakup season". Everything is melting, the temperature can't make up its mind whether its still Winter or Summer and there is a lot of unpredictability. Most companies don't operate during this time frame, and we thought about closing down for a bit to prepare for the summer season, but we figured if you've found yourself in "The Last Frontier" during these weeks you deserved a chance to get out of Anchorage.
We cannot guarantee the most pristine landscapes. There will be dirt. There will be mud. There will be dirty, muddy, melting snow. But we can guarantee a good time! Grab your rubber boots! Your Tour Guide to the Wild Side has you covered with a comfortable ride (that won't charge you a cleaning fee) and tales of this beautiful place we call our home. Even at its worst, the drive down the Turnagain Arm provides some of the most breathtaking views in the Anchorage area.
We will keep you as clean as possible as we drive around the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center and introduce you to our favorite furry friends, making sure to save time for all the muculent photo ops. On our way back to Anchorage, we will stop in Girdwood for folks to grab snacks, souvenirs and more and check out this fun, forest town while it decides its just not that in to Winter anymore.

Did you know that salmon are semelparous animals? This simply means that they only have one mating cycle in their lifetime, and it leads to their death. A salmon will return to the same fresh water stream or river where it was born to lay its eggs. After the male has fertilized the eggs, both the male and female will stay near the nest to protect their eggs for as long as they can (which appears to be what the salmon in the video are doing), before ultimately losing the battle against time and their biology. Fortunately their bodies fill the water with nutrients their offspring will need as they begin their slow journey to the ocean. I had such a great day with these three. I’ve never had such diversity in my van, and with only 3 people!
