Packing for Alaska
What to Pack for Your Alaskan Adventure

Packing for Alaska can feel like preparing for all four seasons in one trip! The state’s unpredictable weather means layering is the key to staying comfortable, whether you’re exploring the tundra or cruising along the coast.

✅ Year-Round Essentials:
Layering Basics: Start with moisture-wicking base layers (avoid cotton), add an insulating layer like fleece or wool, and top it off with a waterproof and windproof jacket.
Footwear: Waterproof hiking boots are a must, even if you’re not trekking rugged trails. For urban areas, sturdy walking shoes will suffice.
Accessories: Don’t forget light gloves, hat, and maybe scarf for extra warmth if you get cold easily. Sunglasses are surprisingly useful year-round, especially with the glare from snow or water.

✅ Summer Extras:
Bug Protection: Insect repellent is a lifesaver during mosquito season (June–August), particularly if you’re heading into forests or wetlands.
Sunscreen: Even on cooler days, the sun’s reflection off water and ice can cause sunburn.

✅ Winter Extras:
Thermals: Thermal socks, insulated gloves, and hand warmers are essential for outdoor activities like Northern Lights viewing.
Snow Gear: If you’re planning on skiing or snowmobiling, consider packing snow pants and a heavier parka.

📌 Additional Must-Have: A small daypack to carry snacks, water, and extra layers while you’re out exploring.

🌞 When Should You Visit Alaska? 🌨️

Planning your Alaska adventure starts with choosing the right season to visit. Each time of year offers something unique, making Alaska a destination that truly caters to every kind of traveler.

Summer (June–August): The most popular season to visit! Experience the Midnight Sun with up to 20+ hours of daylight, allowing you to pack in activities like hiking, glacier kayaking, fishing, and wildlife watching. This is the prime time to see bears feeding on salmon, whales breaching along the coastline, and wildflowers blooming in alpine meadows. Temperatures are mild, averaging 60–70°F (15–20°C).

Winter (November–March): Alaska transforms into a snowy paradise during the winter months. It’s the best time to see the Northern Lights dancing across the sky, go dog sledding, or try out winter sports like skiing and snowshoeing. Temperatures can vary widely, from mild winters in coastal areas to sub-zero conditions in the Interior, so bundle up!

Spring (May) & Fall (September): These shoulder seasons are perfect for travelers looking to avoid crowds and enjoy quieter experiences. Spring brings fresh greenery, while fall offers golden tundra landscapes and the start of the Northern Lights season. Wildlife spotting is excellent during both periods.
