Very few experiences bring together offbeat adventure and epic road-tripping quite like this voyage across Mongolia's Gobi Desert. Set atop a bluff where the South American pampa (fertile plain) meets Lake Sarmiento, the 40-room Tierra Patagonia is exactly where we’d want to find ourselves between the whipping winds: Clad in lenga beechwood and banked with earth, the walls of this low-slung hotel barely register the gales blowing over from Patagonia’s Southern Ice Field. It’s not all rough and tumble, though. Interiors at the hotel are spare but cozy, with wide, light wood-framed windows and white finishes throughout, and even a well-stocked library. Depending on your fitness level, set up a half- or full-day excursion to the Paso de Agostini, or the French Valley, to both get off-grid and have a dream setting to return to after long days hiking and biking.
