• Equine Assisted Activites / Adaptive Riding
• Hippotherapy; a tool for physical, occupational or speech therapy

Equine Assisted Therapy Alaska’s programs provide benefits to children and adults who are living with physical, emotional, or intellectual disabilities, currently serving 79 riders a year. Children under six years of age make up 25% of the program’s riders. School age and teen riders, ages 6-18 represent 27% of our riders, with the remaining 48% being adults. Racial and ethnic demographics of our clientele are 61% Caucasian, 32% AK Native, 5% Hispanic, 2% Asian. EATA sessions are run by licensed occupational, physical, speechlanguage therapists/pathologists, or mental health specialists with a PATH certified riding instructor. During sessions, clients ride a therapy horse and work to fulfill the goals set by the therapist. There are unique challenges not present in clinical settings. For those with limited mobility, the horse's gait provides a unique opportunity for the client to move his or her body in a manner similar to walking. This movement exercises their legs and back and strengthens their confidence and self-esteem. EquineAssisted Activities (EAA) are the many activities that occur at the center, whether the rider is on the horse or not. Activities may include stable management, grooming, learning basic horsemanship skills, shows, and other demonstrations. The goals vary from rider to rider, yet a general goal is to work on self confidence, teamwork, social development, and to gain independence. This environment also improves the rider's core strength, manual dexterity, and flexibility.

With deep regret, EATA’s Board of Directors announces that the summer riding therapy program is cancelled for 2024.

Janie Call, our wonderful Program Director, let us know in January that she is retiring. She has given her all for the program for the last 14 years, including wintering the EATA horses on her ranch in Oregon and driving them up the Al-Can and back every year. She has been the heart and soul of our program and has given selflessly of her time, patience and kindness. We will miss her greatly and wish her well as she spends more time with her family.

Also retiring are three of our four horses. Rocky and Hank have gone to live with Janie’s sons on nearby ranches. Blondie is retired on Janie’s ranch, sponsored by a long-time EATA volunteer. We appreciate our horse friends and are happy they have a beautiful place to live out their lives.

So what does this mean for EATA? We simply do not have the funds or time to recruit a new director or buy horses in time for the summer season. We are sorry to disappoint our riders, who we know look forward to their summer horse time. We are also sorry to disappoint our amazing volunteers, who get as much back as they give to the program.

Going forward, we hope at some point to reorganize and be able to offer equine assisted therapy once again. We know the value it has to the community. The Anchorage Horse Council will continue to operate the William Clark Equestrian Center and provide that service to Anchorage horse lovers.

We will let you know of any future developments. Thank you to our many followers and friends for your support over the years. Not good-bye but until later!

EATA Board of Directors

Check out this item on the EATA Auction-AMAZING Frank Serrano Art-Starting Bid $500.00

Frank Serrano is considered to be one of today's top painters of the Western Landscape and currently resides in the beautiful Owens Valley of California.

Since 1993 he has developed his style of painting with incredible passion, capturing the dramatic
atmospheric effects and stunning light that infuses the landscape of the West. Much of Frank's
early education came from studying the works of highly accomplished painters of the past,
including Edgar Payne, Sam Hyde Harris, Hanson Puthuff, Frank Tenney Johnson and Maynard Dixon, but he also admired contemporaries such as, Clyde Aspevig, Bill Anton and Jim Norton.

Frank has had numerous articles written about his work in leading magazines such as,
Art of the West, Western Art Collector, Southwest Art, Plein Air Magazine and American Artist.
He is a signature member of the Historic California Art Club, becoming a member in 1997 and served as advisor and chairman of its prestigious Gold Medal Museum Exhibition for 3 years.

Frank's passion for painting goes beyond the studio, as he his also a teacher of the art, conducting painting workshops across the country, writing the well known book, Plein Air Painting in Oil and producing a couple of how to paint Plein Air DVD's. Franks knowledge of painting also led to an invitation from Disney Animation Studios to teach painting classes and to advise on painting techniques for 3D film application.

Frank Serrano's paintings can often be found in collections, museum exhibitions and galleries across the country.

Please see below for some testimonials on the amazing services EATA provides to the community:

"EATA has been an experience that has benefited my daughter on many levels. She has gained a love of horses, respect for working as a team, as well listening to her body when multiple parts are working together. She has learned to focus better, follow directions, and to communicate with those around her. It has provided her a way to try and be aware of her surroundings and body awareness that she continues to struggle with. We are grateful to be able to take advantage of this opportunity for her to make connections and grow!" - Michelle Kuehn

"Being able to provide hippotherapy every summer is a favorite of mine! I love that we are able to get the kiddos out to engage with nature, animals, and other people. The benefits I've seen over the years are life changing for some of our families. We've had kiddos who have said their first words and sentences while on the horse, who have transitioned from not being able to get into the barn due to anxiety to asking parents every day when it's time for horse therapy and jumping right on, and who have increased their skills over the summer to become community walkers. We love being able to provide this service!" - Sara Montgomery, PT with All for Kids Pediatric Therapy

Recent studies conducted by the Institute of Heart-Math provide a clue to explain the two-way ′′healing′′ that occurs when we're close to horses.
According to researchers, the heart has an electromagnetic field larger than the brain: a magnetometer can measure the energy field of the heart that radiates from 2.4 meters to 3 meters around the human body.
While this is certainly significant, perhaps more impressive than the electromagnetic field projected by the heart of a horse is five times larger than that of a human being (imagine an electromagnetic sphere around the horse) and it can influence straight into our own heart rate.
Horses are also likely to have what science has identified as a "coherent′′ heart rate (heart rate pattern) that explains why we can feel better when we're close to them. Studies have found a coherent heart pattern or HRV to be a solid measure of well-being and consistent with emotional states of calm and joy-that is, we exhibit such patterns when we feel positive emotions.
A coherent heart pattern is indicative of a system that can recover and adapt to stressful situations very efficiently. Many times, we just need to be in the presence of horses to feel a sense of well-being and peace.
In fact, research shows that people experience many physiological benefits by interacting with horses, including lower blood pressure and heart rate, higher beta-endorphins (neurotransmitters acting as pain suppressors), decreased stress levels, decreased feelings of anger, hostility, tension and anxiety, better social working; and greater feelings of empowerment, confidence, patience and self-efficacy.
