Details:

Fantastic aurora this night in Saariselkä (Finnish Lapland) from 23rd to 24th March 2023. Thanks to an unexpected crack in the earth's magnetic field we were able to enjoy a strong level of geomagnetic storm (Kp=7). The auroras started to be seen to the south, and then grew higher and higher in the sky. Then they came to cover the whole sky with a multitude of shapes and movements. Reddish auroras abounded, occasionally being so intense that the colour was visible to the naked eye. This image was taken on the ascent to Kaunispää hill, which has one of the longest toboggan runs in the world. A modified camera (full spectrum) with a fisheye lens and six consecutive shots were used to achieve this panoramic view of about 280° horizontally and 120° vertically. The sky was completely clear and the ambient temperature was almost -30º Celsius.

Mars Dust Killed NASA's InSight Lander

NASA’s InSight mission on Mars is officially over. After more than four years of collecting data on seismic activity under the surface of the Red Planet, the lander lost power because of Martian dust covering its solar panels.

Mission controllers at the agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Southern California were unable to contact the lander after two consecutive attempts, leading them to conclude the spacecraft’s solar-powered batteries have run out of energy – a state engineers refer to as “dead bus.”

NASA had previously decided to declare the mission over if the lander missed two communication attempts. The agency will continue to listen for a signal from the lander, just in case, but hearing from it at this point is considered unlikely. The last time InSight communicated with Earth was Dec. 15, 2022.

'Within each of us there is a sacred place that is always at peace. Try and spend at least a few minutes each day travelling to this inner sanctuary. Close your eyes, deepen your breathing, and rest in this gentle, peaceful place within. It is like a holiday for your soul.' - Natalie Southgate

Dear Sisters and Brothers in the Four Directions:

This year, January’s Full Moon is a "micro-moon." In simple terms, it refers to the Moon's furthest point from Earth.🌎

This moon is also known as the Wolf Moon, a name given by Native American tribes. The tribes named the January Full Moon after the wolves, the reason being because they would hear the wolves howling all through the nights of winter in January. It is believed that in this month the wolves actually howl more, even howl in an attempt to “sing” to the moon.

The wolf is seen as a spiritual symbol of protection, loyalty, instincts, freedom, courage and spirit - which strongly falls into the recurrent theme of this moon phase.

Happy Full Moon!🌕

With Love,
Grandmother Flordemayo✨

Wolf Cukier was a junior at Scarsdale High School in New York. During his junior year, he got a two-month internship with NASA. So he went to Greenbelt, Maryland, to the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.

SMALL ASTEROID DISINTEGRATES OVER CANADA: Astronomers are getting better at this. Yesterday, for the 6th time in recent history, an Earth-bound asteroid was discovered before it hit Earth. Astronomer David Rankin was conducting a routine survey at Mt Lemmon, Arizona, on Nov. 19th when he spotted the 1-meter space rock coming in from the asteroid belt. Three hours later it was blazing through the atmosphere above Canada:
Dereck Bowen photographed the Moon-bright fireball (above) from his backyard in Brantford, Ontario. "It was a lucky shot," he says. "I had my GoPro set up trying to get some action from the Leonids meteor shower, and I was astonished to find the asteroid." Not everyone was surprised. Rankin's discovery triggered warnings of an imminent impact. According to the Minor Planet Center, seven observatories had time to photograph the sub-meter object before it hit on Nov. 19th at 08:27 UTC. This is a testament to astronomers' improving ability to catch incoming dangers from space. After the asteroid entered the atmosphere, ground-based weather radars tracked pieces of the disintegrating space rock as far down as 850 meters above Earth's surface. It was a deep hit, and meteorites may have reached the ground east of Grimsby, Ontario. NASA created this map of the fall zone:Colored polygons estimate the landing sites of meteorites from ~1g (yellow) to 10kg (red) [more maps] Credit:NASA/ARESMost of the fall landed in Lake Ontario but small masses might be found east of Grimsby with larger masses near McNab, according to NASA's Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science Division. If you find a piece, here's how to handle it.More than 50 eyewitness reports of the fireball have been submitted to the American Meteor Society from as far south as Maryland in the USA. Experienced observers say the fireball's peak brightness was between magnitude -10 and -20. For some people the fireball was brighter than a full Moon.

Nope. It’s not a painting, and it hasn’t been photoshopped either. These are polar stratospheric clouds over Iceland.

In Icelandic, polar stratospheric clouds are called glitsky, which roughly translates to “glitter cloud.” What makes them so unique to witness is that they can be even more elusive than the Aurora Borealis.

Polar stratospheric clouds form in the winter polar stratosphere at altitudes of 15 to 25 kilometres above sea level and are best observed during civil twilight, when the sun is between one and six degrees below the horizon. Normally, clouds do not form in the stratosphere due to its extreme dryness.

There are two distinct types of polar stratospheric clouds: Type I clouds are composed of nitric acid and water (and sometimes also sulphuric acid), while Type II clouds contain only water ice.

The first type plays an important role in Antarctic ozone destruction. They are also occurring with increased frequency in the Arctic.
