Today’s photo contest winner is out of Tennessee— Nikki M! Congrats! Nikki Metzler Photography, LLC

Can you tell us about your passion for photography and your connection to Alaska?💡 I’ve always loved photography and started taking it seriously back in 2013 after moving to California. Found some great mentors and read a lot of photo books! My favorite scenes to shoot are landscape and beachscapes. It just seems to be my calm space. My Alaska connection was our two-week Alaskan vacation we took at the beginning of June. This was a bucket list trip for me and our 23rd Wedding anniversary trip (that was supposed to happen in 2020, but…covid). We started out with a 7-night cruise from Vancouver to Seward. And then continued on land to Denali National Park.

❓Can you tell us the story of the photo you submitted? (what time of year, location, how long did it take, etc💡 This image was taken from our cruise ship balcony the first week of June 2024. We were on a smaller ship and conditions happened to line up just right that the Captain was able to get us within about a mile from Hubbard Glacier. Image was shot with my Canon R6 and the Canon RF 100-500mm lens I rented and using my tripod. The smaller boat in the photo is one of the Hubbard Glacier excursion boats. You read about just how massive these glaciers are, but I wanted to be able to actually show it, and that boat gave me the perfect opportunity to do that!

❓Is there a place / experience in Alaska you’d love to cross off your photography bucket list? 💡 This was one of the big ones!! And I absolutely fell in love and still felt like there wasn’t enough time for everything! I would love to go back to see and photograph the northern lights and to Kodiak Island to photograph the bears!!!

Can you tell us about your passion for photography and your connection to Alaska?💡 My passion for photography started after a visit to Yosemite National Park and seeng an exhibit on Ansel Adams. I was in awe of how he captured the landscape, the feel of an area, the essence of what he was experiencing. So I started my journey into photography. Alaska has so much to offer, from the tidepools of our shores to the towering mountain peaks and living here gives me the opportunity to experience this daily!

❓Can you tell us the story of the photo you submitted? (what time of year, location, how long did it take, etc💡 This image was taken in Homer, Alaska, during autumn on a very low tide. A coworker (silhouetted in the image) and I had just completed some training and wanted to search the tidepools for the bounty of the ocean! I was crouched low, looking at the sea stars and other things found in these tidepools when she walked into view, just as the sun was beginning to get lower in the sky. I thought to myself, ""what a cool scene!!"" and asked if she would walk by again to capture the moment of searching for the bounty of the sea!

❓Is there a place / experience in Alaska you’d love to cross off your photography bucket list? 💡 Living in Alaska has allowed me to experience so much of what the State has to offer, but I would love to visit Katmai, to witness the bears at the falls! That is a bucket list place and image for me!

Can you tell us about your passion for photography and your connection to Alaska?💡 I was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska and have had a passion for photography since I was a teenager. I have been photographing the beauty of Alaska for over 20 years, visiting the far reaches of this beautiful state from Katmai National Park to Harding Icefield to the deep backcountry of the Chugach Mountains and everywhere in between. My favorite wildlife to photograph are the majestic Dall Sheep.

❓Can you tell us the story of the photo you submitted? (what time of year, location, how long did it take, etc💡 While visiting Homer, Alaska in the summer of 2024, I decided to photograph the massive lupine blooms that lined the roadway on the Spit. I noticed a small grouping of birds flying among the lupine and I was able to photograph the sparrows going from lupine to lupine.

❓Is there a place / experience in Alaska you’d love to cross off your photography bucket list? 💡 One place I would love to visit in the Brooks Range during the fall to capture the beautiful fall colors and the wildlife that call that place home.

Can you tell us about your passion for photography and your connection to Alaska?💡 Living in FL, I am familiar with the nature in flatlands. Alaska on the other hand provides the beauty of the vast wilderness of the mountains which takes my breath away.

❓Can you tell us the story of the photo you submitted? (what time of year, location, how long did it take, etc💡 Early September in Haines, I spent my days observing, learning and capturing the special moments of the mama bears catching salmon, teaching their cubs how to catch fish and interacting with other bears to protect their cubs. I mostly forgot myself and the time during the course of 8 or more hours waiting. It was truly an amazing experience.

❓Is there a place / experience in Alaska you’d love to cross off your photography bucket list? 💡 Yes, absolutely. Kenai Peninsula, Katmai National Park is my dream place for more bear pictures.
