Explaining hoar frost vs. rime ice. 📖

Here you see examples of hoar frost. These alders developed ice crystals during a period of calm, clear nights over the past few weeks. Humid air skips the droplet stage and goes straight to crystallizing. When the sky is clear, like is has been, the temperature quickly drops since no clouds are providing insulation. ❄️

Rime ice on the other hand is formed during freezing fog when wind speeds are high. It can be hard or soft, and appear sugary or spiky. 💨

Hey friends! My family and I recently experienced. incredible Grand Knik Tour. We were blown away! They took us to three incredible destinations in the Knik River Valley. We saw Lake George Glacier (picture #1), Colony Glacier, and Knik Glacier (picture #3). 🧊

You know, I guide helicopter snowshoeing and hiking tours out there, but this tour was super special and it was awesome having family there to experience it. It was enjoyable to see the ice walls up close and spend a casual time just soaking in the sights and sounds with having to make it a strenuous affair.

Thanks to our pilot Sam, and to for taking us on a one of a kind experience we won’t be forgetting. My daughter even said it was “pretty cool” and that’s a win in every way. 😉

As we transition from winter’s chill to summer’s warmth, it is essential to remember that we’re venturing into bear country! To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, be bear aware and take these simple precautions: (1) Hike in groups and stick together, (2) make noise, especially in areas with thick brush or near running rivers, (3) stand your ground and appear large if a bear approaches, and (4) keep bear deterrent handy in case of attack (though unlikely, it’s better to be prepared).

By following these tips, you’ll minimize the risk of a negative encounter and maximize the joy of exploring Alaska’s breathtaking wilderness.

Yesterday was a fantastic day at the Eagle River Nature Center! Our valley and forest hike was filled with exciting sightings, including a couple of majestic moose along the way and a variety of bird species. Guests discovered and learned about fascinating plants including lichen, lungworts, coltsfoot, and old man’s beard. It was a truly enriching experience, connecting with nature and exploring the beauty of the great outdoors!

Hello All,

I lost my Go Pro 11 yesterday somewhere in the South Fork Eagle River Vicinity between Barbara Falls and the North/South Fork Eagle River Confluence.

It could be along the creek headed north or downstream going to the confluence, at the confluence, or on the main trail headed from the confluence.

It could also be at at Barbara Falls. I have a lot of memories and work videos on that camera that I would love to get back. If you find it and can return it I’ll give you $100.

It is in a case on a foldable tripod with a slightly cracked front screen. DM me with information or if you find it. Appreciate the help!

Hungry Bull

We never get tired of watching these amazing animals while out snowshoeing. This bull moose was enjoying the snowy day trying to find some food to munch on. Bull Moose are HUGE!! This majestic animal can get 4.6 ft to 6.9 ft tall, 7.9 ft to 10.2 ft in length, and weigh 840 lbs to 1500 lbs 🫨 During the winter Bull Moose will loose their antlers but grow them back in the spring much larger. The resaon for the antler shedding is so they can conserve energy while out in the cold, scarce winter months. The antlers are very import for a bull moose.
