Share the Love for the The City of Anniston, Alabama! Exciting things are happening on the Chief Ladiga Trail! The new bridge over Cane Creek crossing just south of Michael Tucker Park was recently completed.

The City of Anniston, Alabama is working to complete the trail extension this spring, which will add an additional 6.5 miles, bringing the Chief Ladiga Trail's total length to approximately 39.5 miles. Once completed, the Chief Ladiga Trail (CLT) will connect Anniston’s Multimodal Amtrak Station to the state of Georgia’s Silver Comet Trail, forming the longest paved pedestrian pathway in the United States by becoming an appropriately a total of 105 mile of paved trail.

Trail access will be restricted until the project is completed.

Today the Calhoun County Area Chamber & Visitor's Center and Visit Calhoun County, Alabama Tourism was proud to honor Fred Couch Jr. as the 2024 Tourism Champion at the 46th Annual Meeting.

The Tourism Champion award is given to an alliance or an individual that promotes and collaborates to increase the tourism experience throughout the Calhoun County Area. This year’s award is a tribute to someone who's given their time to bringing visitors to Calhoun County by working tirelessly to spread the message and garner support for Calhoun County tourism. The recipient has been innovative in improving visitor experiences in Calhoun County and has taken a leadership role in developing tourism opportunities in Calhoun County.

This year’s recipient is a local retired businessman who has done civic work for the benefit of others his whole life. He and his wife have been active in our community for many years and have given their time and support to various organizations.

His is an alumnus of the University of Alabama and a United States Navy veteran. He is soft-spoken and has an easygoing way. He gets things done with dogged determination and has never been a quitter. He was an instigator of the formation of the Anniston Museums and Gardens Berman Museum.

He has volunteered, as well as provided sponsorship support to various civic and non-profit groups including: the Anniston Morning Rotary Club, The Choccolocco Heritage Society, and Alabama JayCees.

As past president of the Spirit Of Anniston, he helped with a project placing plaques on historic buildings downtown listing date of construction and adding them to the National Register of Historic Places.

He founded the Alabama Scenic River Trail Association in 2007 - a nonprofit group that advocates for the recreational use of the state’s waterways. Named a national recreation trail by the National Park Service, this is the longest one-state water trail in the United States. This 631-mile long river trail runs from the Georgia state line to historic Fort Morgan on the Gulf Coast

He spearheaded dozens of projects, including River Kids, a program that introduced thousands of children to paddle sports, a program to help maintain clearer passageways on Alabama waters, and a statewide recreational sign program establishing mile markers on the Alabama Scenic River Trail.

He is a former president of a local store and retired in May 2009 after 60-year career in business. He began his long-lived career working as a salesperson in his parent's toy store in 1948. In 1958, his parents, purchased the former Anniston Jewelry Company, changing the name to Couch's Jewelers. He took a managerial position in the business in 1968 and was a Registered Jeweler with the American Gem Society for over 30 years. From 2014 to 2019 he was the also co-owner of Floating Fun, an inner tube rental business on Choccolocco Creek.

Congratulations to Fred Couch Jr., the 2024 Tourism Champion for promoting travel to Calhoun County!
