Janelle Sawyer - Birth Doula

Janelle Sawyer - Birth Doula I offer 2 prenatal sessions so we can get to know each other. As your cheerleader and advocate, I want to understand where you're coming from.

It's important to me to understand not only your preferences for your birth but the values behind them. I believe having some rapport helps us work well together during the deeply personal work of birth. No matter how wonderful your nurse is, she's in the room with you only a small percent of the time you're in labor. In place of the age-old human support women have always received from the birth-

wise women in their communities, hospitals, even busy nurse-midwives, encourage reliance on chemical pain relief and synthetic labor induction. If you'd like to birth more naturally, a doula will provide the kind of experienced care that women have known in every culture for thousands of years. I specialize in providing support to women who are interested in natural childbirth. I will help with every aspect of preparing for the birth experience, from practicing natural pain relief techniques to figuring out how to solve situations like "failure to progress." For women who are more comfortable relying on medical technology, a doula is still useful for dealing with anxiety, involving dads/partners, and more. For all my clients, I will be there for you from the minute labor begins until your baby is born.

Did you know? I'm consulting for pregnant moms who are working on their birth plans. I can do phone or skype consults (out-of-state ladies!) with a simple fee structure: $25 for the first hour, $20 for every hour after that. Hey, think of all the books you'd need to buy and read compared to having an expert to sift through the options with who can get at what's most important for your best birth experience (or, after you've read a stack of books, I help you take all that research-based information and integrate it with your values to create the complete picture you really need to make your decisions). Message me for details.

I'm reading Toni Morrison's Beloved, where the six-months pregnant Sethe is running away from slavery. "How Sethe was walking on two feet meant for standing still. How they were so swollen she could not see her arch or feel her ankles. Her leg shaft ended in a loaf of flesh scalloped by five toenails. But she could not, would not, stop, for when she did the little antelope rammed her with horns and pawed the ground of her womb with impatient hooves..."

"She sank and had to look down to see whether she was in a hole or kneeling...she waited for the little antelope to protest, and why she thought of an antelope Sethe could not imagine since she had never seen one. She guessed it must have been an invention held on to from before Sweet Home, when she was very young..."

"Oh but when they sang. And oh but when they danced and sometimes they danced the antelope. The men as well as the ma'ams, one of whom was certainly her own. They shifted shapes and became something other. Some unchained, demanding other whose feet knew her pulse better than she did. Just like this one in her stomach."
