Out of devastation springs a social enterprise from cancer survivor, Lisa Maurer, and caretaker, Bo Hammond. Ever since Lisa’s battle with cancer, the couple wanted to do something meaningful to fight the disease and make the world better in general. Their solution is Tours for Humanity, a company dedicated to providing quality tours of the nation’s capital with an altruistic twist. The premise be

hind Tours for Humanity is simple: it uses history to help people. The company offers walking tours of the nation’s capital, taking visitors to the National Mall, Arlington Cemetery, Capitol Hill, and other Washington, D.C. At the end of the year, Tours for Humanity pledges to contribute a portion of its profits to three charities fighting ignorance, poverty and disease, including the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and Ashoka. The third charity will be chosen by their top supporters and rotate on a yearly basis. In addition to donating profits to charities, Tours for Humanity sets rigorous standards for its supply chain and uses its uniform as a platform to raise awareness about other companies dedicated to good causes. Each tour guide wears a uniform for good, which is comprised of products sourced from businesses, such as TOMS, FEED Projects and Freeset Tees, that provide social benefits to the world. The reviews of Tours for Humanity are positive, with teachers and students raving about the quality of the tours. A high school teacher from New York who recently participated on a tour with his students said, “I have been teaching U.S. history and government for the last five years and I am learning stories that I didn’t even know.”

Tours for Humanity assembled a talented team of teachers and history buffs to give tours. With their collective expertise and dedication to social issues, Tours for Humanity is poised to make a real difference. When asked about his vision for Tours for Humanity, Bo offered that, “Our tours won’t save the world, but it’s a step in the right direction.”
