I want to go into detail a little bit about what I do and WHY I do it because there have been some miss conceptions around the Travel Agent Industry in general.
I got into this because I love traveling myself, but I also LOVE helping others plan and execute their travel desires! I Honestly did not get into it lightly. I hear people say over and over again how they should become a “Travel Agent” for “The perks” and I chuckle because us seasoned agents know the “Perks” are not what we do this for!
This is a JOB just like any other job. We work extremely hard and many times it honestly is not worth it when you consider the hours involved and the commission you make BUT so many people do it because it is what they have a passion for, and it is there “Second Job” which is my case!
I feel like Disney is the biggest misconception out there because there is a “Disney Travel Agent” around every corner and many sign up with “agencies” just for “Perks”. Disney has my heart and I LOVE going to Disney BUT I hardly ever book Disney for clients because of the amount of work involved, it takes up a LOT of hours when you are making sure the clients have everything they need and want and you want to make sure they have the most amazing trip ever! Disney is also a trip that many people feel they can book on their own “easily” and then use the internet and try to figure out what is true and not true lol. Disney like almost all companies has “Commission” pre built into everything meaning that if you book a trip or buy tickets on your own you ARE paying the commission, but it goes directly back to Disney. If you book through Expedia or Costco or Sams club, THEY make the commission. YOU ALWAYS PAY COMMISSION. And Disney has a low commission percentage which is ok with me personally because that is not what I care about, but so many agents will not even book Disney or Universal because it is not making them money and they want to use there time more wisely! I want my clients to have amazing trips! I love getting feedback from clients and seeing pictures, THAT is why I do this!
As for “Perks” of being an agent, I get none with Disney because I choose to have an annual pass because the “Perks” from being a passholder outweigh TA “Perks” BY FAR!!
There are discounts with certain companies for being a travel agent but not enough to make it count in my honest opinion.
We do hours and hours of work and do not receive a penny until AFTER the client has traveled. If a client cancels we get zero for the hours of work we have put in. For instance, a Disney booking valued at $5300 might have a commission of $150 AFTER they travel. Agents like myself pride ourselves on giving extra magic to clients so we might send a care package or print documents that you, the client could print yourselves, BUT it is something I love doing that for my clients and shows i truly care about them having a fantastic trip!Everything we send clients is out of our own pockets. When we get a client “On Board Credit” for cruises it is almost always out of our own pockets!
I had a client ask me the other day why I do this when the pay isn’t always worth my time and my answer was BECAUSE I LOVE IT!
I LOVE helping people! Agents who do this full time and have no other jobs have hundreds and thousands of clients traveling every week of the year and some for very high commissions from extremely large bookings that are international or group travels OR they charge a planning fee which I do not do! My services are FREE meaning the client pays me NOTHING, the companies I book you through pay me the commission that they already have in the booking!

Now you are probably thinking that I get family and friends “Perks” and the answer is NO! I wish I could, but it does not work like that!
My friends don’t even book with me a lot of the time, they book their own trips because mixing friendship with business doesn’t always mix and I 100% understand and I don’t have hard feels although I do get sad when I see people I know traveling and I know they booked on their own and I could have potentially saved them money with discounts that are not publicly known!
When a company invites us to go tour a place, 90% of the time we can not take anyone with us and the few times we can we pay for them to go AND we pay a % of the cost for US to go! Nothing is free lol.
I go to trainings, and I pay for my flights and hotels and car rentals and use them as tax write offs for business trips but I STILL PAY FOR THEM!
I am lucky enough to have a best friend who loves to travel, and she is my travel partner when I am allowed to take someone with me for certain trainings and we might split the cost of a room or a car BUT she doesn’t get to go for free because I don’t get those types of perks! She also has Disney Annual Pass because it is 100% worth it with the perks and discounts alone!

Long story short, being a travel advisor is a LOT of work, but I absolutely LOVE IT and I am so happy I did my schooling and am constantly doing trainings and taking classes to broaden my knowledge and I have an AMAZING agency who keeps you going even when it is hard!

I LOVE my clients and I am very happy to answer questions even when the questions are what perks I get and if this business is worth it 🤣.
