Nest usurpation, brood parasitism, or egg-dumping? I love discovering unusual and unexpected interactions in nature. Here we document a mother Western Bluebird (Sialia mexicana) visiting a nest occupied by a Violet-green Swallow (Tachycineta thalassina). What the heck is going on here?

I’m a little late with this video…this was from back in mid-June, when dickcissels (Spiza americana) were singing their hearts out in an open meadow near Castlewood Canyon State Park. While breeding birds are mostly solitary and territorial, wintering birds gather in enormous flocks, sometimes numbering in the millions.

Harlequin Ducks (Histrionicus histrionicus) in Yellowstone National Park. So much fun to watch this spectacular duck navigate the currents of the Yellowstone River. I don’t know where they get all that energy from. Crustaceans perhaps 🤪 A lifer for me and my guests @rfp19ramix and @irmadelcarmen !
A beautiful male Yellow-headed Blackbird put on a great show for us near the road in Yellowstone National Park.

Rare Bird Alert on the front range! I don’t typically chase many birds, but this one was close enough to my home and far enough from its home that I decided to try to find it. Grace’s Warbler (Setophaga graciae) is a beautiful little wood warbler that can be found in park-like conifer forests throughout the southwest. It was named in honor of Grace Coues, the 18-year old sister of its discoverer Elliot Coues.

Sagebrush Sparrow (Artemesiospiza nevadensis) just might be my favorite sparrow. They remind me of tiny roadrunners, scurrying around on the ground between patches of shrub cover. Living in vast, wide open spaces, Sagebrush Sparrows have territories that are larger than any other species of sparrow.

The Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) is one of North America’s earliest nesting birds. Here in the Denver area, the chicks are ready to leave the nest by mid-to-late April. The young owls will stay with mom and dad until the following nest season begins, but are more often weaned by mid-to-late summer.

The Black-billed Magpie (Pica hudsonia) may be one of the most common birds we find around the Denver area, but that certainly doesn’t detract from how cool they are. Some people hate them, but I appreciate them for their elevated intelligence and social acumen.

The Marsh Wren (Cistothorus palustris) lives a secretive, yet bellicose life under the cover of wetland reeds. One male can build over 20 dummy nests in his territory as he attempts to mate with multiple females. He and his mate will regularly destroy the nests, eggs, and nestlings of other birds near his territory, and in some cases the male may even destroy his own offspring. Unlike House Wrens, Marsh Wrens do not best in cavities. They instead build dome-shaped grass nests within the reeds and cattails.

We get 3 species of swans in the United States, 2 native (Tundra and Trumpeter) and one non-native (Mute). Mute swans are easy to identify, with their long S-curved necks, bright orange bills, and black knobs, but man are Tundra and Trumpeter a challenge!
The swans shown in this video were previously identified as Tundra (Cygnus columbianus), but honestly, it wasn’t easy for me to see how they were different from Trumpeter. I spent a long time with them trying to learn the subtle differences from Trumpeter. Sometimes Tundra will have a noticeable yellow spot in front of the eye, but many individuals don’t (including those featured here). The principle - yet extremely subtle - difference I noticed with these two immature birds is the slightly concave bill and the angle at which the head meets the bill. Their cheek also has more of a circular look to it where it meets the bill as opposed to the more jagged, triangular look of the Trumpeter.

I recently found a Harris’s Sparrow (Zonotrichia querula) mixed into a flock of White-crowned Sparrows. This is a species that you can get at your feeder in winter time in central and eastern Colorado. It breeds only in Canada and winters primarily throughout the Great Plains region.

January is a time when you would expect to see breeding behavior on display in diving ducks like Barrow’s Goldeneye (Bucephala islandica). Most often observed is a behavior known as rotary-pumping, where the male moves his head back and forth making the shape of an arc. Unfortunately, I did not see this happening. All the females around him were Common Goldeneyes; they have darker bills and more slanted foreheads than Barrow’s. Hopefully this male can find himself a mate soon. Although hybridization between these two species can happen, it is not very common.
