Pack's Tavern, a well loved establishment in Asheville, NC dating as far back as the Prohibition era is one of the stops on our Asheville Ghost Tour.
🍺 Prohibition-Era Terror: 🍺
Did you know, the building’s basement was equipped with an underground tunnel which leads all the way to Eagle Street, two blocks over, where moonshine was smuggled onto vehicles and then distributed throughout the region? At the time, it was a movement that was largely headed by women who were sick of being beaten and physically abused by their drunken husbands, fathers, and brothers. When Asheville held a vote to determine whether or not it would embrace prohibition, large numbers of women and children worked to dissuade and even physically block men from voting against the bill since they held no right to vote themselves.
One such woman heard of Carrie Nation's deeds and was in awe of her courage and determination. This woman lived on the outskirts of Asheville and was married to a man who had a quick temper made even quicker by drinking; although she’d thought they loved each other when they married. Empowered by Carrie's actions this woman turned her husband in to whom she thought was a trusted police officer who in turn turned her into her husband and was the result of him beating her until her eyes rolled back in her head and she passed in a pool of her own blood.
One night, though, as the man was wheeling a shipment of moonshine through the long, dark tunnel beneath the streets her spirit appeared, and her presence triggered a heart attack that ended his life in the very tunnel he killed her for.
