The Alaska Earthquake happened 60 years ago today, March 27, 1964. Liz and I and the seven-month old kid named Bobby lived on the Naval Air Station at Kodiak, Alaska. Sometime after 5pm that day the earth shook hard for over four minutes; power poles swayed, lines parted, water boiled up through cracks in the ice on the lake across the street from our row of on-base duplexes, howling dogs leaped in the air, some of our fellow duplex dwellers knelt to pray on the sidewalk. A mile away we watched avalanches plunge down Baromoter mountain. But soon it all stopped and, a bit shaken, we went back inside to listen to the base radio station (no TV). About 40 minutes later came this announcement: “Chief Warrant Officer Henry Pickerell (a ham radio operator) has received word from Cape Cheniak that a tidal wave (we did not then know the word tsunami ) is headed for Kodiak. You are advised go to high ground.” The radio station was in a building on on the water and it soon went off the air as its personnel heeded their own warning. With about 50 other families we drove into the mountains to a ski lodge maintained by the Navy. It was cold with no electricity and after an hour or so most of us returned to the base. Our duplex was 80 to 100 feet above sea level and thus untouched by the water. However, it did considerable damage on the base and flattened the town of Kodiak, killing 15 of the approximately 3,000 residents.
The island of Kodiak is mountainous and approximately 50 by 150 miles. The earthquake tilted it about 5 1/2 feet so that, since that day 60 years ago, the tide rises 5 1/2 feet higher on the town and Navy base side of the island. There were aftershocks for months and for 10 days no power or heat.
Many “dependents” elected to return to the “lower 48.” Liz and Bob stayed. A few months later I was reassigned and, in June 1965, we all drove to California via the Alcan highway and I-5.
