As of 2025, all US citizens must have an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to travel to certain destinations, including the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland) and Israel, even if you are just stopping there for a layover. Additional countries plan to implement this in the coming year.
