Urban forestry can be controversial to say the least. This forested stand of hemlocks had 90% of the trees in advanced stage of decay. With houses, power lines, pedestrians and traffic vulnerable, the decision was made to remove the trees to mitigate risk. At the time the decision to remove was made, a plan to replant was also made. Habitat logs and snags were left along with much of the understory native plantings. More long term stable tree species were chosen: Douglas firs and Coastal redwoods. It will be years until this forest is as tall as its predecessor, but when it is it will be more resilient. I look foreword to watching it grow.

Check out the Ten Lined June Bug. It’s big, 1.5 inches in this photo taken in a planter outside the Astoria Co-op. These critters can be bad news for trees. In a larvae stage they feed on tree and plant roots sometimes leading to death of the trees. A decline in trees can happen without ever seeing the adult beetle. If identified early a tree can be saved. https://www2.ipm.ucanr.edu/agriculture/almond/Tenlined-June-Beetle/

I hope everyone is doing ok after last night’s ice storm. It demonstrated the resilience of well maintained trees as well as the vulnerability of trees in general. Here is a video from this morning of the Astoria street trees we maintain bi yearly. Contrast these trees with the destruction of almost all of the trees in front of Safeway (not maintained by us or anyone if I’m not mistaken). Give us a call if your trees need our help.
