Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is an annual holiday observed in the United States on June 19th. It commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in Texas on June 19, 1865, following the end of the American Civil War.

The Emancipation Proclamation, issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, declared that all slaves in Confederate territory were to be set free. However, it took several years for this news to reach all parts of the country, particularly Texas, where the institution of slavery persisted.

On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced General Order No. 3, which proclaimed the freedom of all slaves in Texas. This event marked a significant milestone in the abolition of slavery in the United States.

Juneteenth represents a celebration of freedom and African American heritage. It is a time to reflect on the struggles and achievements of African Americans throughout history and to recognize the ongoing fight against racial injustice. It is often marked with various activities, including parades, picnics, historical reenactments, and community gatherings. In 2021, Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday in the United States, signifying its importance in the nation's history.

Good morning travel family!

We are very excited to have you attend and participate in the 2023 Black Travel Expo in Atlanta this weekend. We are bringing together a full lineup of fun and exciting travel exhibitors, keynote speakers, and panelists. Most importantly, "YOU" our travel consumers.

BTE program update:

Friday June 9th - 6pm until 8pm only: Louisville Tourism has created an exciting and interactive evening which includes derby race games, hatitude-fascinator and hat making and because we are in Georgia, peach mint juleps. Get ready to have fun, win prizes and connect at The Gathering Spot!

Friday's exhibitors, keynotes and panel discussions are on Saturday only.

Saturday June 10th - 845am until 530pm (doors open at 8am for attendees): We have moved all programming from Friday June 9th, to Saturday June 10th. Doors will open at 8am and at 8:45am, we will begin the program. The program quality and time for each segment will not change and the exhibitors will be available all day. The BTE schedule is also updated on the website.

Make sure you grab breakfast before arriving Saturday morning. Coffee, Teas, assorted drinks and water will be provided. Lunch will also be provided on a first come first serve basis.

We are happy to announce that Danny Andrews will be joining us at the BTE and will be a speaker on the DE&I panel discussion. This is an absolute honor, and here's why.

Danny is a result-oriented professional with extensive experience advising clients on legal, strategy, and operations in various industries, including hospitality/travel, entertainment, media, and fintech. He currently serves as the General Counsel and Global Head of Strategy and Inclusion at TSAD Group Inc., a firm that advises clients on business, legal, and strategy matters. Additionally, he is the Chief Inclusion Officer for DE&Me, a consultancy that partners with its clients to navigate the complexities of DE&I and ESG to achieve inclusive sustainability.

Danny is an avid traveler and has lived abroad for many years. While living in Abu Dhabi, Danny served as the General Counsel of Image Nation, where he oversaw global legal affairs and advised the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi on a host of international matters (including strategic partnerships, mergers and acquisitions, real estate, and media and entertainment investments). Danny has served as the Vice President of Legal and Head of Commercial, Strategic, and Corporate Affairs at the global travel company, Priceline. Danny has also held senior roles in legal and business affairs at successful tech startups and multinational corporations.

Danny began his career as an entertainment, advertising, marketing, technology, IP, and finance lawyer at Manatt, Phelps, and Phillips LLP in Los Angeles. He holds a Bachelor's and a Law degree from UC Berkeley, as well as an executive MBA from Oxford University. Additionally, he is certified in DE&I from Cornell University.
