Skye Bear was rehomed three times before we adopted her. She was the barkiest Mayor of Barktown. And she was no different here. She journeyed back and forth to the lake. A few times with me and the huskies but mostly with Kate in the truck. And their travels really created a strong love bond. I loved her too but what they had was super special.
She frolicked, swam, ran free, took many walks with us through the woods, down country roads. She lounged like a big furry bear loaf. She plodded and rarely moved quickly. Unless you were trying to head back home to the city. And then she ran away fast. But we could outrun her. She never met a couch she didn’t love. She fiercely defended the yard from song birds to hawks. Kate had an intuition that something was wrong this Sunday. She said, “Skye is acting weird. She may not be long for this world.” She couldn’t articulate why though. None of her examples tracked and as she talked, Skye blazed across the peeling deck boards, tail bannering barking her deep metronome bark at some imagined foe. I laughed and pointed to her and Kate said, “I guess I’m wrong. “. We agreed she was slowing and we had joint supplements on board to help with arthritis.Skye ate and I left for Alabama. In the morning, Kate found her flat and unresponsive (but alert) by one of the chicken coops. With amazing Melissa’s help they loaded her and raced to the vet. I was on the call with the vet discussing options when Skye took decision making from us and crossed the plane to the other side. We were shocked. Horrified. Grief stricken. She was the sweetest girl with the most loving liquid brown eyes. All she wanted was her huge fuzzy head petted, her velvet ears stroked, and her belly scratched. And she loved her morning doggy treats. She was special in the way most dogs are. Your attention and love filled her soul and completed her.My last interaction was rushed as I mostly dash through my life, but she was in the top of the deck stairs and I took her huge head in my hands, looked in her deep brown eyes and told her I love her. We were that way for a few moments and I petted and loved on her. And I’m glad that’s how we left it.
