"Buildings have lives." -James E. Brunson, Editor

Image of the Black examines visual representations of the black presence in the Global African Diaspora. It focuses on authenticity/mass production, poetics (properties of a β€œmade” thing) and rhetoric (communication of meaning and effects), objecthood, exhibition/display, and connoisseurship/consumption. Space and Architecture explores black rela

tionships to architectural form, the realm of building structures and the social universe surrounding them. Buildings have lives. It discusses their capacity to influence social and intellectual life, their role as status signifiers (sacred sites, tourist sites, and demographic shifts), impact upon domesticity (middle-class communities), urbanity (ethnic enclaves, ghettoization and gentrification) and civic awareness (historical landmarks). It considers them as artistic subjects, real estate ventures, and aging entities with life stories.
